Pehlwani
Pehlwani, (पहलवानी) also known as Kushti, is a form of wrestling contested in South Asia. It was developed in the Mughal Empire by combining Persian Koshti pahlevani with influences from native Indian Malla-yuddha. The words ''pehlwani'' and ''kushti'' derive from the Persian terms ''pahlavani'' (heroic) and ''koshti'' (wrestling, lit. killing) respectively, meaning Heroic wrestling. A practitioner of this sport is referred to as a ''pehlwan'' (Persian word for ''hero'') while teachers are known as ustad (Persian word for ''teacher'' or ''master''). One of the most famous practitioners of Pehlwani was The Great Gama (Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt), who is considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Uday Chand
Udey Chand (born 25 June 1935) is a retired Indian wrestler and wrestling coach who was the first individual world championship medal winner from independent India. He was awarded the first Arjuna Award in wrestling in 1961, by Government of India. Early life Chand was born on 25 June 1935 in Jandli village of Hisar district and currently resides in Hisar. Career He started his career with the Indian Army. He created history by winning a bronze medal in Light Weight (67 kg) Freestyle at 1961 World Wrestling Championships at Yokohama. During his bout against the eventual world champion Mahamed-Ali Sanatkaran he was particularly unlucky as referees judged his throwing down of the opponent outside the area and the bout ended in a 1–1 draw. Ramesh Kumar is an Indian wrestler, who the bronze medal in the Men's 74kg Freestyle Wrestling event at the 2009 Wrestling World Championship in Herning, Denmark. Prem Nath (1 July 1951 – 1 June 2015) was an Indian freestyle wrestler. He won a gold medal at the 1974 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in Christchurch. He was a President's Medal-winning retired Delhi Police official and was known for his efforts to popularise wrestling in Delhi. Personal life Prem Nath was trained by coach Guru Hanuman. Pehelvan Kikkar Singh Sandhu (January 13, 1857 – February 18, 1914) was born in a Sandhu Jat family. He was a wrestler from Lahore, British India (now Pakistan. Life Singh was born to wrestler Javala Singh Sandhu and Sahib Kaur. His parents were farmers of moderate means in the village of Ghanienke, Lahore district (now in Pakistan). Singh trained as a wrestler in his mother's native village, Nurpur, under the village potter, before returning to Ghanienke to continue training with wrestler Vasava Sing. Singh was already a popular wrestler when he started his tutelage under Buta Pahilvan, Rustam-i-Hind, of Lahore. Singh developed world class skill, and eventually became the leading Indian wrestler. Guru Hanuman actual name Vijay Pal Yadav (1901–1999) was a legendary wrestling coach of India who coached many medal-winning wrestlers. He was awarded the prestigious Dronacharya Award in 1987, the highest recognition for a sports coach in India, and the Padma Shri in 1983. Early life Guru was born as Vijay Pal Yadav on 15 March 1901, in the Chirawa town of Rajasthan state. He did not attend school, but began wrestling at the local village akhada from an early age.
