Pastoral leases in Western Australia are increasingly known as "stations", and more particular – as either sheep stations or cattle stations. They are usually found in country that is designated as rangeland. In 2013 there were a total of 527 pastoral leases in Western Australia. And all leases were put up for renewal or surrender in 2015. Stations/pastoral leases are a significant part of Western Australian history. At different stages inquiries, pleas for extensions of lease times and royal commissions have been made into the industry. Nearly 90 million hectares or 36% of the area of Western Australia are covered by these stations. Despite the very low population involved in general management of stations, significant numbers of seasonal workers (shearers and others) have moved through the sheep stations to shear for wool. A pastoral lease, sometimes called a pastoral run, is an arrangement used in both Australia and New Zealand where government-owned Crown land is leased out to graziers for the purpose of livestock grazing on rangelands. Australia Pastoral leases exist in both Australian commonwealth law and state jurisdictions. They do not give all the rights that attach to freehold land: there are usually conditions which include a time period and the type of activity permitted. According to Austrade, such leases cover about 44% of mainland Australia (), mostly in arid and semi-arid regions and the tropical savannahs. The Shire of Broome is one of the four local government areas in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia, covering an area of , most of which is sparsely populated. The Shire's estimated population as at the was 16,222 most of whom reside in the town of Broome. Many Aboriginal communities are within the Shire, notably Beagle Bay and Bardi (One Arm Point). Anna Plains Station
Anna Plains Station is a cattle station in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Location The station is situated on the Western Australian coast south of Broome. It lies in the Shire of Broome in the Kimberley region and in the Dampierland bioregion. It is in area and runs over 20,000 head of cattle. Anna Plains is operating under the Crown Lease number CL56-1982 and has the Land Act number LA3114/1154. Alice Downs
Alice Downs Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in Western Australia. it is one of four stations known as the Springvale Aggregation, owned by Harvest Road. History The property was established prior to 1901; the manager that year was F. G. Taylor. The area had been struck by ticks at the same time, though Alice Downs had not been largely affected. The owners of the property, Yates, Taylor and Cranwell, placed the property on the market in 1908, at which time it was stocked with 1,800 head of shorthorn cattle. Frank Taylor retained possession of Alice Downs but with a new partner, H. F. Parnell, who was also known as C. H. Newman. Albion Downs
Albion Downs Station, often referred to as Albion Downs, is a pastoral lease that operates as a sheep station. It is located about north west of Leinster and south of Wiluna in the Mid West region of Western Australia. History The property had been established prior to 1928 when it was owned by Mr. Howard. Sheep had been introduced to the property and increased in numbers as the country was being opened up. The quality of wool produced at the property was highly regarded, with top prices being paid for bales from Albion. In 1976, the property was being run by Glenda and John Howard. It had suffered through a five-year drought and the flock had been reduced from 20,000 to 9,000 sheep. Dingos were also a problem and regularly had to be shot to protect the stock. The Shire of Menzies is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia located to the north of Kalgoorlie. It covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Menzies. History The Shire of Menzies originated as the Menzies Road District, which was established on 31 May 1912 after the subdivision of the North Coolgardie Road District into three separate road districts (Menzies, Kookynie and Mt Malcolm).
