Outsider Art
Outsider art is art made by self-taught or supposedly naïve artists with typically little or no contact with the conventions of the art worlds. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds. The term ''outsider art'' was coined in 1972 as the title of a book by art critic Roger Cardinal. It is an English equivalent for ''art brut'' (, "raw art" or "rough art"), a label created in the 1940s by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture. Dubuffet focused particularly on art by those on the outside of the established art scene, using as examples psychiatric hospital patients, hermits, and spiritualists.Cardinal, Roger (1972). Gladwyn Bush
Gladwyn Klosking Bush (14 March 1914 – 24 November 2003), also known as Miss Lassie, was a Caymanian folk painter. Life and career Gladwyn was born in South Church Street, George Town, Cayman Islands in March 1914 to Richard and Margaret Bush and was one of ten children. Many Caymanians who grew up with her described Gladwyn in her childhood as being a "wild child". Friends recalled her chasing them and her brothers down the beach with a machete. Others remember her having broken glass bottles lining her fence due to a belief it would protect her household from spirits. During her life, she was not oblivious to those who declared her a madwoman, but instead took some pride in the matter. Vernon Burwell
Vernon Burwell (1916–1990) was an African-American sculptor known for his painted cement sculptures of animals and busts of historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Sojourner Truth, and Martin Luther King Jr. Life and career Burwell was born on April 28, 1916, in North Carolina into a sharecropping family. His parents died when he was thirteen and he was subsequently cared for by seven other farming families. At age sixteen, he joined the Missionary Baptist church, where he later became a deacon. At age 26, in 1942, he married and began working for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. He was promoted to master mechanic and repaired diesel locomotives for the rest of his career. He and his wife raised five children, three girls and two sons, together in Rocky Mount. After 33 years of service to the railroad industry, Burwell retired in 1975 on disability due to diabetes-related eye sight deterioration. Richard Burnside
Richard Burnside (1944 - 2020) was an American self-taught folk art painter known for his distinct portraiture style and use of patterns. He had lived in Pendleton, South Carolina., but spent the last few years of his life in Georgia. Life Burnside was born on November 29, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland, but moved to South Carolina when he was five years old. He attended Sterling high School in Greenville, South Carolina. He held many jobs throughout his life including seven years working at the S&H Green Stamp store in Greenville, a seven-year stint in the U.S. military, and later as a hotel chef in Charlotte, North Carolina. He married twice, first in 1966 to Maggie Holiday (divorced in 1969) and second to Mary Givens in 1974 (divorced 1976). He had two daughters by Holiday and one son and one daughter by Givens. Ursula Schultze-Bluhm (17 November 1921 – 9 April 1999), also known as Ursula, was a German painter. In 1979 she was part of the Sydney Biennial. Nicholas John Blinko (born 4 September 1961) is a British musician and artist, best known as the lead singer, lyricist, and guitar player for the anarcho-punk band Rudimentary Peni. He is also known for being an "outsider" artist, whose pen-and-ink drawings and paintings have been shown in galleries worldwide. Blinko also creates all the drawings used by the band for its artwork. Gregory Lee Blackstock (January 9, 1946 – January 10, 2023) was an American self-taught artist. Regarded as an autistic savant, Blackstock created drawings featuring orderly categories of types of objects.
