List Of Olympic Venues In Field Hockey
For the Summer Olympics, there are 34 venues that have been or will be used for field hockey. The competitions were first held at the Olympic Stadium until 1928 when it was held at a stadium that did not have the Olympic Stadium title. From 1936 to 1960 with the exception of 1952, the competitions were held in more than one venue. Artificial turf made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Summer Olympics. The last field hockey competitions that was not held on a single venue was in 1996. At the 1908 Summer Olympics held in London, England, 26 athletics events were contested, all for men only. A total of 79 medals (27 gold, 27 silver, 25 bronze) were awarded. Each nation was allowed to enter up to 12 competitors in most of the events. In the team races (the medley relay and the 3 mile team race), each nation entered one team. The medley relay was run by four athletes, with four alternates allowed. In the 3 mile team race, five athletes from each nation ran with only three counting. The competition was restricted to amateurs, and was held under the rules of the British Amateur Athletic Association. Olympisch Stadion (Antwerp)
The Olympisch Stadion () or Kielstadion ) was built as the main stadium for the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. For those games, it hosted the athletics, equestrian, field hockey, football, gymnastics, modern pentathlon, rugby union, tug of war, weightlifting and korfball (demonstration) events. Following the Olympics it was converted to a football stadium. Its current tenant is K Beerschot VA, a Belgian football club. There are no remnants of the Olympic athletics track. It is possible that Archibald Leitch was involved in the design of the stadium having made several visits prior to the Games. At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, nine wrestling events were contested, all for men. There were four weight classes in Greco-Roman wrestling and five weight classes in freestyle wrestling. Greco-Roman reappeared for the first time since the 1896 Summer Olympics, with weight classes for the first time. The number of classes in freestyle was reduced from 7 to 5, with the light fly, fly, and welterweight classes dropped but the middleweight added. These were the first Olympic Games in which a 100-metre pool had been especially constructed (inside the main stadium's track and field oval).
