Clara Schroth
Clara Marie Schroth-Lomady (October 5, 1920 – June 7, 2014) was an American artistic gymnast who won a team bronze medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics. She also competed at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. Although individual medals had been awarded to male gymnasts since the inception of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, women would not be awarded with individual medals until 1952; however, under the rules that began in 1952, Schroth's performance in 1948 would have garnered her an individual medal of second-place silver on vault (referred to in the Official Olympic Report as the "Pommeled Horse"), tied with Joan Airey of the United Kingdom, as Schroth had the 2nd-highest score on the apparatus of 80+ athletes in the competition. Meta Elste-Neumann (October 16, 1919 – October 30, 2010) was born Bremen, Germany. As Meta Elste, she was a competitor for the United States Women's Olympic Gymnastics team at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom and the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki Finland. She won an Olympic bronze medal with the United States team in 1948. Elste was three when her parents emigrated from Germany and settled in Chicago. She learned her gymnastics at the Lincoln Turner Hall on the north side of the city. She briefly attended Lake View High, but after her father suffered a debilitating stroke she had to drop out at the age 14 to help earn money for her family. She used her gymnastics skills as a member of a traveling circus. Consetta Caruccio-Lenz (26 September 1918 – 2 July 1980) was an American gymnast who competed in the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics and in the 1948 London Summer Olympics. Caruccio got her start in gymnastics at the age of 14 when she joined the Germania Turnverein gymnastics club in Baltimore, Maryland. A multi-sport athlete, at one point she set the US national record for the 50 yard dash, completing it in 6.3 seconds. Samantha Nicole Peszek (born December 14, 1991) is an American former artistic gymnast. She was a member of the U.S. women's gymnastics team at the 2008 Summer Olympics, which won silver. Following her elite gymnastics career, Peszek competed for the UCLA Bruins. She is a 17-time All-American, the 2011 and 2015 NCAA balance beam champion, and the 2015 NCAA all-around co-champion with Kytra Hunter. Carly Rae Patterson (born February 4, 1988) is an American singer, songwriter and former artistic gymnast. She was the all-around champion at the 2004 Olympics, the first all-around champion for the United States at a non-boycotted Olympics, and is a member of the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Gymnastics Patterson began gymnastics after attending a cousin's birthday party at a Baton Rouge gymnastics club (Elite Gymnastics) in 1994.
