The Odia film industry, colloquially known as Ollywood, is the Odia language Indian film industry, based in Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack in Odisha, India. The name Ollywood is a portmanteau of the words Odia and Hollywood. Industry In 1974, the Government of Odisha declared film making and construction of cinema theatres as an industry in the state, and in 1976 it established the Odisha Film Development Corporation in Cuttack. History Odisha has a history of filmmaking, starting from 1936. The first Odia film is ''Sita Bibaha'', made by Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami in 1936. Drawn from the Indian epic ''Ramayana'', the story is about the marriage of Sita and Ram. The film plot was made from a drama written by Kamapala Mishra. Prepared with a budget of only Rs 30,000, the film has 14 song sequences. Mahasweta Ray is an Indian actress and television personality who is known for her work in Odia films and soap operas. Her numerous accolades include record 8 Odisha State Film Awards. Biography Ray was born in an academic family (Rajkishore Ray was a writer and academic) and had had limited exposure to cinema before she started a career in film. Bijay Mohanty
Bijay Mohanty (8 April 1950 – 20 July 2020) was an Indian actor in Odia Cinema. He was honored a National Film Award. Personal life ;Early life Mohanty was born in 1950 at Pandiri, Kendrapara and brought up in Baripada, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. He started acting during his school days while studying at M.K.C High School. After his graduation with BA, he joined the National School of Drama. He passed successfully from the NSD with classmates like Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, and Om Puri etc. He acted in the theatres and stayed in Delhi up to 1975. Chilika Teerey
''Chilika Teerey'' is a 1977 Indian Odia film directed by Biplab Roy Choudhury, story of an oppressed, illiterate fisher-folk, being swindled and kept in check by the business sharks and how they revolt. Plot Near Chilika lake, there is a cluster of villages inhabited by fisher-folk. They are exploited by the large fishing companies. Raghu, a revolutionary village youth leads the village to confront the fishing company. One fishing company manager Sricharan tries to demoralise and divide the unity of fisher-folk. But the revolution starts with pace. While Sricharan tries to escape from the scene, the villagers thrown him up in the Chilika lake. Raghu, has a love interest with a village girl Padma, but he is not allowed to marry her as she belongs to another caste. Anita Das
Anita Das (1 October 1953 – 11 May 2018) was an Indian film and television actress in Odia cinema. She received three Odisha State Film Awards during her career. Das died of cardiac arrest which resulted from a heart attack on 11 May 2018 at the age of 64. Career Anita Das made her acting debut in 1975, in the Odia film, ''Jajabara'' where she played the lead role. She predominantly appeared in more than a hundred movies since then, mostly in supporting roles as a mother. She was quite popular for essaying the role of mother in most of her films after the 1980s. Das received the Odisha State Film Award (Best Actress) for her acting in the film, ''Tapasya'' in 1980 and also received the prestigious award again for her lead role in the 1983 film, ''Bhakta Salabeg''.
