The Odia film industry, colloquially known as Ollywood, is the Odia language Indian film industry, based in Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack in Odisha, India. The name Ollywood is a portmanteau of the words Odia and Hollywood. Industry In 1974, the Government of Odisha declared film making and construction of cinema theatres as an industry in the state, and in 1976 it established the Odisha Film Development Corporation in Cuttack. History Odisha has a history of filmmaking, starting from 1936. The first Odia film is ''Sita Bibaha'', made by Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami in 1936. Drawn from the Indian epic ''Ramayana'', the story is about the marriage of Sita and Ram. The film plot was made from a drama written by Kamapala Mishra. Prepared with a budget of only Rs 30,000, the film has 14 song sequences. Bhubaneswar (; ) is the capital and largest city of the States and territories of India, Indian state of Odisha. Cuttack
Cuttack (, or officially Kataka ) in Odia is the former capital and the second largest city in the Indian state of Odisha. It is the headquarters of the Cuttack district. The name of the city is an anglicised form of ''Kataka'' which literally means ''The Fort'', a reference to the ancient Barabati Fort around which the city initially developed. Cuttack is known as the ''Millennium City'' as well as the ''Silver City'' due to its history of 1000 years and famous silver filigree works. The Orissa High Court is located there. ''Mana Akasha'' is a 1974 Oriya film directed by Nitai Palit based on Basant Mahapatra's Novel ''Jhara Baula''. The film portrays socio-economic conflicts in rural Odisha. Plot Sashank Patnaik and Rudra Choudhury are close friends. Rudra's son Bhanu develops love relationship with Sashank's daughter Mala. After demise of Rudra, Sashank tries to acquire the properties of Rudra. In spite of knowing Mala is pregnant and Bhanu is her lover, Sasank tries to kill Bhanu by giving poison to be the owner of the whole property. Nityananda Palit, known as Nitai Palit (8 March 1923 – 26 July 1990) was a playwright, actor and director. In 1965, he received the President's Award from Indira Gandhi for direction in his film ''Malajahna''. Sriram Panda ( or, ଶ୍ରୀରାମ ପଣ୍ଡା, born c. 1954) is an Indian Odia actor, director and a screenplay writer hailing from the Nabarangpur district, Odisha, India. Career Sriram Panda started his film career in Dhir Biswal's '' Dharitri'' directed by Nitai Palit in 1972, which was a success. In 1975 he starred in the lead role of Jajabara directed by Trimurti which was a huge hit & is still regarded as one of the classic films to be ever made in Odia film industry. A coloured version of Jajabara was later released which garnered high popularity among the masses. In 1976 he starred in 6 films 4 of which were commercially successful. He emerged as Superstar of Odisha in the 1980s and 1990s.
