List Of Ohio Civil War Units
During the American Civil War, nearly 320,000 Ohioans served in the Union Army, more than any other Northern state except New York and Pennsylvania. Of these, 5,092 were free blacks. Ohio had the highest percentage of population enlisted in the military of any state. Sixty percent of all the men between the ages of 18 and 45 were in the service. Ohio mustered 230 regiments of infantry and cavalry, as well as 25 light artillery batteries and 5 independent companies of sharpshooters. Total casualties among these units numbered 35,475 men, more than 10% of all the Buckeyes in uniform during the war. There were 6,835 men killed in action, including 402 officers.Harper, pp. 9–10. Flag Of The United States (1863-1865)
The national flag of the United States of America, often referred to as the ''American flag'' or the ''U.S. flag'', consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white, with a blue rectangle in the canton (referred to specifically as the "union") bearing fifty small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows, where rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternate with rows of five stars. 7th Ohio Infantry
The 7th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment formed in northeastern Ohio for service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It served in the Eastern Theater in a number of campaigns and battles with the Army of Virginia and the Army of the Potomac, and was then transferred to the Western Theater, where it joined the Army of the Cumberland besieged at Chattanooga. It was noted for its holding the high ground at the center of the line at Antietam as part of Tyndale's 1st Brigade, Greene's 2nd Division of Mansfield's XII Corps. It is of the 7th regiment that a war historian wrote, "All in all, considering the number of its battles, its marches, its losses, its conduct in action, it may be safely said that not a single regiment in the United States gained more lasting honor or deserved better of its country than the Seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry." The 20th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service Three-months regiment The 20th Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized at Columbus, Ohio April through May 1861 in response to President Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers and mustered into service on May 23, 1861, under the command of Colonel Charles Whittlesey. The 18th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service Three-months regiment Companies A, C, and E enrolled at Ironton, Ohio, on April 22, 1861. Company B enrolled at Marietta, Ohio, on April 27, 1861. The 17th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service Three-months regiment In response to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln's call on April 15, 1861, for 75,000 volunteers, ten companies composing the 17th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment were enrolled in late April 1861. 12th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. History The 12th Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Dennison, Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 3, 1861, for three-months service, and reorganized on June 28 for three years, under Colonel John W. Lowe, who was killed early in the war and was succeeded by Col. Carr B. White. The 12th Ohio served in western Virginia until August 1862, when it was transferred to the Army of the Potomac and participated in the battles of Second Bull Run, South Mountain and Antietam. In the fall of 1862, it was again transferred to western Virginia and did efficient service until the spring of 1864, when it joined Hunter's expedition to Lynchburg, Virginia.
