The following is a list of Tax Commissioners of North Dakota since the office was created in 1919. The office was an appointed position from 1919 to 1940, and an elected position on the no-party ballot from 1940 to 1987, and an elected position on a party ballot since 1987. Party information given for the commissioners who served before 1940 is based on the party of the Governor of North Dakota who appointed them to the position. From 1940 to 1987, the office became an elected position, but was placed on the no party ballot. Since 1987, the office has been placed on a party-affiliated ballot. Brian Kroshus
Brian Kroshus (born 1963/1964) is an American businessman and politician serving as the Tax Commissioner of North Dakota. He is a former member of the North Dakota Public Service Commission. Kroshus was appointed to both positions by Governor Doug Burgum. Early life and education Kroshus was born in Fargo, North Dakota and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science from North Dakota State University. As a child, he participated in 4-H programs. Career A member of the Republican Party, Kroshus owns and operates a cattle and grain business. Ryan Rauschenberger
Ryan Rauschenberger is the former Tax Commissioner of North Dakota, the 24th person to serve in that role. Governor Jack Dalrymple appointed Rauschenberger, the son of Dalrymple's Chief of Staff Ron Rauschenberger, to the role in 2013 after the resignation of Cory Fong. Rauschenberger announced he would resign effective January 3, 2022. Alcoholism treatment While drinking on the afternoon of September 3, 2014, Rauschenberger lent his vehicle to his friend Jesse Larson, who was also intoxicated. While driving Rauschenberger's vehicle, Larson rolled the vehicle, damaging its front end. Police cited Larson for driving under the influence and reckless driving and had him taken to an emergency room for minor injuries. Cory Fong
Cory Fong (born August 6, 1972, Great Falls, Montana) is a North Dakota public servant. He is a Republican, and the former state State Tax Commissioner. Fong was appointed Tax Commissioner in 2005 by Governor John Hoeven following the resignation of Rick Clayburgh (who left the job to become executive director of the North Dakota Bankers Association). He was elected to the position in 2006, when he faced Brent Edison, 53% to 47%, after a heated campaign. Richard S. "Rick" Clayburgh (born April 8, 1960) is a North Dakota Republican politician and current director of the North Dakota Bankers Association. Clayburgh was elected as the state's Tax Commissioner in 1996, and re-elected in 2000 and 2004. He resigned effective May 2005 to become President and CEO of the North Dakota Bankers Association and Cory Fong was appointed to serve until an election in 2006 (where Fong was elected). Gaylord Kent Conrad (born March 12, 1948) is a former American politician who was a United States Senator from North Dakota. He is a member of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party, the North Dakota affiliate of the Democratic Party.
