The Gazette has been published in Tortola since 9 March 1967 under the provisions of Section 2 of the ''Interpretation and General Clauses Act 1955''. The ''Virgin Islands Daily News'' is a daily newspaper in the United States Virgin Islands headquartered on the island of Saint Thomas. In 1995 the newspaper became one of the smallest ever to win journalism's most prestigious award, the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. The newspaper is published every day except Sunday. The paper maintains its main office on Saint Thomas and a smaller bureau on Saint Croix. Business history The ''Virgin Islands Daily News'' was founded by Ariel Melchior Sr. in 1930, with business partner J. Antonio Jarvis leveraging a tourist brochure financed with a bank loan cosigned by friend Adolph Achille Gereau. With the success of the brochure he was able to attract further advertising and convince his family and the bank to extend a larger loan. He first produced an updated guide to the island and with the proceeds bought a second-hand press. With the profits of the newspaper, he repaid the bank. Melchior was just 21 at the time. ''The BVI Beacon'' is a weekly British Virgin Islands newspaper founded in June 1984 and published on the island of Tortola. The ''Beacon'' is owned and published by local businessman Russell Harrigan, also the publisher of ''Business BVI''. The online version of the newspaper was founded on February 14, 2001. The paper's motto is "The light that comes from wisdom never goes out." The paper is published on Thursdays, and organised into sections: Local News, Business, Weekend and Culture and Sports. The first ''Beacon'' cost 35 cents. In 2018, the price was raised to $1. History The first issue of the ''Beacon'' was published on 7 June 1984. At the time, there was only one other newspaper in the territory, the ''Island Sun'', which held a virtual monopoly on the business since 1962. The Sun is published weekly by Sun Enterprises (B.V.I.) Limited, owned by businessman and historian Vernon W. Pickering. The ''Standpoint'' is a defunct newspaper formerly published in the British Virgin Islands. It was originally published under the name ''Pennysaver'', largely as a shopping-coupon promotional newspaper, and later emerged as one of the most influential sources of journalism in the Territory. It was published weekly on Tuesdays. Motto The newspaper's motto (published on its front page every week) is "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."
