The ''Papua New Guinea Post-Courier'' is a newspaper based in Konedobu, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. It was established on 30 June 1969. Its parent company, The Herald and Weekly Times (later purchased by News Corp Australia), had acquired what had then been the two main newspapers in Papua New Guinea, the three-days-a-week ''South Pacific Post'' and the twice-weekly ''New Guinea Times Courier'', and decided to amalgamate them into one publication. It was the first national daily newspaper in Papua New Guinea. Luke Sela was editor from 1978 to 2000. With a circulation of 41,000, the ''Post-Courier'' is the largest selling Pacific Island newspaper. The paper is majority owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. The ''Post-Courier's'' readership is mainly urban, and it is considered to be influential in the community. ''Wantok Niuspepa'' (''Wantok Newspaper'') is a weekly newspaper in Papua New Guinea. It is the only Tok Pisin-language newspaper in Papua New Guinea, and is distributed throughout the country. It was first published on 5 August 1970 from an office in Wewak with Father Francis Mihalic, a member of the Society of the Divine Word order, as its editor; while the project had first been initiated by Catholic bishops, it subsequently received limited support thereafter. It moved to Port Moresby in 1976. It is now operated by the Word Publishing Company. ''The Independent'' was a national weekly newspaper published in Papua New Guinea from September 1980 to 5 June 2003. It was an English-language publication. It was published in the Port Moresby suburb of Boroko by Word Publishing, owners of the Tok Pisin-language Wantok Niuspepa. It was known as The Times of Papua New Guinea from its launch in September 1980 with Franz Albert Joku as the inaugural editor until May 1995, when it was rebranded as The Saturday Independent amidst financial issues. It later changed its publication date to Thursday and adopted the name of The Independent. In 2001, it absorbed another Word Publishing title, PNG Trade Monthly, which became a business liftout in the newspaper. By the time of its closure, it had bureaus in Mount Hagen, Lae, Rabaul, Madang and Bougainville. Joe R.
