Nelson Football Club is an English semi-professional association football club based in the town of Nelson, Lancashire. Founded in 1882, the club played friendly matches for its first eight years, before becoming one of the founder members of the Lancashire League in 1889. The team won the Lancashire League title in 1896, however, after enduring a month-long Football Association suspension,the club left the league during the 1898–99 season following the 3–2 home defeat by Ashton North End on January 12 and their record for that season was subsequently expunged when they were expelled by the Lancashire FA. Having completed the North-East Lancashire Combination League and Shield double in 1900, Nelson were accepted back into the Lancashire League the following season and in 1901, they joined the Lancashire Combination. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Since 2015, it has been known as The Emirates FA Cup after its headline sponsor. A concurrent women's tournament is also held, the Women's FA Cup. The competition is open to all eligible clubs down to Level 9 of the English football league system with Level 10 clubs acting as stand-ins in the event of non-entries from above. The 1901–02 season was the 31st season of competitive football in England. League changes Doncaster Rovers and Bristol City replaced Walsall and New Brighton Tower in the Football League. Burton United were formed by a merger of Burton Swifts with former League side Burton Wanderers. Bristol City were the first non-London Southern side in the league. The 1900–01 season was the 30th season of competitive football in England. Overview Events Stockport County played their first season in the football league. Blackpool also returned to the league, at the expenses of Loughborough and Luton Town. Despite a run of four victories at the start of the season, Aston Villa finished fourth from bottom. Tottenham Hotspur became the first and only non-League club to date, to win the FA Cup - winning 3-1 in a replay against Sheffield United of the First Division. 1898–99 In English Football
The 1898–99 season was the 28th season of competitive football in England. Overview Events This was the first season in which automatic promotion/relegation was introduced between the First and Second divisions. Both Divisions were expanded to 18 teams. The new teams to join the Second Division were: Barnsley, Glossop North End and New Brighton Tower. Burslem Port Vale also returned to the Football League. On 26 November 1898, the First Division match between The Wednesday and Aston Villa was abandoned after 79 minutes due to bad light. Rather than let the score stand or replay the whole match, The Football Association ordered that the remaining 11 minutes should be played at Hillsborough on 13 March 1899. The Wednesday, who were leading 3–1 when the game was abandoned, scored one more goal to win 4–1. The 1896–97 season was the 26th season of competitive football in England. Overview Aston Villa became the second team (after Preston North End) to complete " the Double" of winning the Football League Championship and the FA Cup. No other team would complete the double for 64 years. The Cup Final was played on 10 April 1897 between Aston Villa and Everton. At the start of the day, the top of the league table looked thus:This table was extrapolated from the final table, after excluding the results from 10 April onwards. Consequently, with a total of 30 league games to play in the season, only Derby County had any "mathematical" possibility of overtaking Aston Villa to take the title. The 1894–95 season was the 24th season of competitive football in England. League competitions Football League Following the collapse of Middlesbrough Ironopolis and the resignation of Northwich Victoria, three new teams were admitted to the Second Division, bringing it to 16 teams. These new teams were Bury, Leicester Fosse and Burton Wanderers. Southern League The Southern League, a competition for both professional and amateur clubs, was founded in 1894 under the initiative of Millwall Athletic (now simply Millwall), to cater for teams in southern England, who were unable to join the Football League. The 1893–94 season was the 23rd season of competitive football in England. Events Aston Villa won their first top-flight league title, beating Sunderland by 6 points. Villa's captain John Devey was the league's top-goal scorer with 20 goals. The 1893–94 season saw four of the most famous teams in English footballing history join the Second Division: Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester City, and the first team based in London, Woolwich Arsenal (later Arsenal). Other teams to join the expanded Second Division of 15 teams were Middlesbrough Ironopolis and Rotherham Town. Middlesbrough Ironopolis disbanded at the end of the season, having only completed one season in the Football League. The 1892–93 season was the 22nd season of competitive football in England. Events The Football League and the Football Alliance formally merged, and so the Football League Second Division was formed, consisting mostly of Football Alliance clubs. The existing League clubs, minus Darwen (who were relegated) plus three of the strongest Alliance clubs (Nottingham Forest, Newton Heath and The Wednesday, who would later be renamed Manchester United and Sheffield Wednesday respectively), comprised the Football League First Division.
