Mary Abigail Kawenaulaokalaniahiiakaikapoliopele Naleilehuaapele Wiggin Pukui (20 April 1895 – 21 May 1986), known as Kawena, was a Hawaiian scholar, author, composer, hula expert, and educator. Life Pukui was born on April 20, 1895, in her grandmother's home, named Hale Ola, in Haniumalu, Kau, on Hawaii Island, to Henry Nathaniel Wiggin (originally from Salem, Massachusetts, of a distinguished shipping family descended from Massachusetts Bay Colony governor Simon Bradstreet and his wife, the poet Anne Bradstreet) and Mary Paahana Kanakaole, descendant of a long line of kahuna (priests) going back centuries. Pukui's maternal grandmother, Naliipoaimoku, was a ''kahuna laau lapaau'' (medicinal expert) and ''kahuna pale keiki'' (midwife) and a hula dancer in Queen Emma's court. The fourteenth season of ''RuPaul's Drag Race'' premiered on January 7, 2022. The reality competition series, broadcast on VH1 in the United States, showcases 14 new queens competing for the title of "America's Next Drag Superstar". Casting calls for season 14 were opened in November 2020, and the cast was officially revealed by season 13 winner Symone on VH1 on December 2, 2021. The season premiere received 738,000 viewers, making it the most-watched premiere since Season 10. Miss Continental
Miss Continental is an annual female impersonation pageantry system founded in 1980 by Jim Flint. It takes place at the Baton Show Lounge in Chicago, Illinois, and is usually held over Labor Day weekend. In 1991, the Miss Continental Pageantry System created Miss Continental Plus for plus-size competitors weighing 225 pounds or more. Miss Continental Elite was created in 2004 for entertainers forty years of age and older. Miss Continental Plus and Miss Continental Elite had been held each year during Easter weekend in Chicago; now all are held during Labor Day weekend. Sam Choy
Sam Choy Sr. is an American chef, restaurateur, and television personality known as a founding contributor of Pacific Rim cuisine. Biography Choy is the son of a Chinese father, Hung Sam Choy, and a German–Hawaiian mother, Clairemoana. He grew up in Laie, Oahu. Choy is an alumnus of the Kapiolani Community College's Culinary Arts program. One of his first jobs as a chef was at The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. He would then return to Hawaii, where he eventually opened a chain of restaurants. Choy helped develop and popularize Hawaii regional cuisine. In 1991, Choy founded the Poke Festival and Recipe Contest. In 2004, Choy was awarded the James Beard Foundation's America's Classics Award for ''Sam Choy's Kaloko'' in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii. Haunani-Kay Trask
Haunani-Kay Trask (October 3, 1949 – July 3, 2021) was a Native Hawaiian activist, educator, author, and poet. She served as leader of the Hawaiian sovereignty movement and was professor emeritus at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She was a founder of the Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, and served as its director for almost ten years. Early life and education Haunani-Kay Trask was born on October 3, 1949, to Haunani and Bernard Trask. Trask and her family are descendants of the Piilani line of Maui and the Kahakumakaliua line of Kauai. She was born in San Francisco, California, and grew up on the Koolau side of the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Trask graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1967.
