River Gambia National Park
River Gambia National Park is a national park in the Gambia. Topography Established in 1978, River Gambia National Park is located in Niamina East district of Central River Division. It lies on the left bank of the Gambia River. The park includes the Baboon Islands archipelago, which consists of one large and four small islands. The national park is not open to the public. River Gambia National Park is adjacent to Nyassang Forest Park. On some maps, the two parks are represented together as one area. Flora The vegetation on the flat Baboon Islands is typical of a tropical rainforest in the form of a riparian forest. Fauna Since 1979, River Gambia National Park is site of a chimpanzee- reintroduction project, conducted by the ''Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project'' (CRP) under the direction of Stella Marsden (daughter of Eddie Brewer). The Tanji Bird Reserve is a bird reserve in The Gambia. Established in 1993, it covers an area of . It is also known as Karinti, the Tanji River Reserve or the Tanji National Park. Location The Tanji Bird Reserve lies 3 km to the north of the fishing village of Tanji and includes the Karinti River. The protected reserve, which incorporates an area of the Bald Cape and the Bijol Islands (Kajonyi Islands), is located 1.5 km from the Atlantic Ocean coastline. The Bijol Islands are The Gambia's only offshore islands. The Bijol Island consist of two islands which are joined together at low tide. Habitat The Tanji Bird Reserve incorporates mangrove, dry woodland and coastal dune scrub woodland. Tanbi Wetland Complex
Tanbi Wetland Complex is a wetland reserve in the Gambia outside of Banjul which was established in 2001. Location The wilderness site of the Tanbi Wetland Complex, in Gambia, is on the southern channel at the mouth of the River Gambia. It encompasses a total area of about 6,000 hectares, of which mangroves make up 4,800 hectares, located to the west and south west of Banjul. The northernmost portion of the complex skirts the Kankujeri Road of Banjul and includes Cape Creek. It encompasses the western shores of St. Mary Island and extends to the south east towards Lamin and Mandinari Village. It was declared a Ramsar convention protected site in February 2007. Common Chimpanzee
The chimpanzee (''Pan troglodytes''), also known as simply the chimp, is a species of great ape native to the forest and savannah of tropical Africa. It has four confirmed subspecies and a fifth proposed subspecies. When its close relative the bonobo was more commonly known as the pygmy chimpanzee, this species was often called the common chimpanzee or the robust chimpanzee. The chimpanzee and the bonobo are the only species in the genus ''Pan''. Evidence from fossils and DNA sequencing shows that ''Pan'' is a sister taxon to the human lineage and is humans' closest living relative. The chimpanzee is covered in coarse black hair, but has a bare face, fingers, toes, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. It is larger and more robust than the bonobo, weighing for males and for females and standing . Saloum Delta National Park or Parc National du Delta du Saloum in Senegal, is a national park. Established in 1976, it is situated within the Saloum Delta at the juncture of the Saloum River and the North Atlantic. The park, which forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Ramsar Convention site, lies within a biosphere reserve. Water comprises of the park, intertidal mangroves and saltwater vegetation cover , and savannah and forest cover . It lies on the East Atlantic Flyway. The bird species that breed or winter in the area include royal tern, greater flamingo, Eurasian spoonbill, curlew sandpiper, ruddy turnstone, and little stint. Niumi National Park is a national park in The Gambia. The occupies the coastal strip in the northern region of the country, in the southern tip of the Sine-Saloum Delta. It covers an area of approximately 4,940 ha (49.4 square km) and encompasses a range of types of wetlands and vegetation, from freshwater marsh to sand spits and brackish lagoons. ''Rhizophora'' mangrove forest is abundant in the park, and its swamp and mudflats are an important sheltering ground for birds, with over 200 species found here. Kiang West National Park is one of the largest and most important wildlife reserves in the Gambia. It was declared a national park in 1987 and is managed by the Gambia Department of Parks and Wildlife Management. Geography The park covers an area of 11,526 hectares, and is located on the south bank of the Gambia River, in the Lower River Division in the Kiang West District. The park's headquarters is situated in Dumbuto Village which is 18 minutes drive away from Tendaba village, from the Gambian capital city Banjul, and from the Gambian coastline. The Gambia River marks the park's northern boundary. Three ''bolons'' (creeks)—the Jarin, Jali, and Nganingkoi—divide the park's interior into three sections.
