Batrachedra Arenosella
''Batrachedra arenosella'', the armoured scale eating caterpillar or the coconut moth, is a species of moth of the family Batrachedridae. It was first described by Francis Walker using specimens collected in Auckland, New Zealand. It has been hypothesised that the New Zealand moth may contain two distinct species. As well as the moth species in New Zealand, this name has been applied, perhaps incorrectly, to moths found in India, Indonesia, the Malay Peninsula, and Réunion, as well as in Australia, from the Northern Territory and northern Queensland to New South Wales and South Australia. Taxonomy ''B. arenosella'' was first described by Francis Walker in 1864 using specimens collected in Auckland, New Zealand by Daniel Bolton. From 1924 this species name was also applied to moth species found in south east asian countries as well as in Australasia that are known to ingest the flowers of coconut trees. The application of this name to these moths has been argued to be ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Cosmopterix Attenuatella
''Cosmopterix attenuatella'' is a moth of the family Cosmopterigidae described by Francis Walker in 1864. It is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics of both the Old and New World, including the United States, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Virgin Islands, Dominica, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Galápagos Islands, Cook Islands, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius and Saint Helena. The wingspan is about 9 mm. There are probably two generations per year in the south of the temperate zone and more overlapping generations in the tropics, because here adults can be found throughout the year. The larvae feed on Poaceae ('' Melinus minutiflora''), '' Cyperus rotundus'' and '' Scirpus'' species. They mine the leaves of their host plant. The mine has the form of a blotch that descends from close to the tip of the leaf, occupying the e ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Anatrachyntis Incertulella
__NOTOC__ ''Anatrachyntis incertulella'', the pandanus flower moth, is a small cosmet moth species ( family Cosmopterigidae). It belongs to subfamily Cosmopteriginae. This was the first " micromoth" species to be described from Hawaiʻi. The type specimens were collected there by the 1820s Beechey expedition and described by the English entomologist Francis Walker in 1864; they are now in the British Museum of Natural History. It is found mainly in Polynesia, from the Hawaiian Islands across the Society and Marquesas Islands to the Austral Islands and Pitcairn Island. It has also been recorded on Fiji, in Queensland (and maybe elsewhere in Australia), on Okinawa and on Rodrigues; except the first locality, these seem to be fairly recent introductions or accidental finds however. The caterpillar larvae feed on ''Pandanus'' species, including '' Pandanus tectorius''. Synonyms This species has been described anew several times from localities where it was not yet known ... It was first described by the German Bohemian entomologist, Joseph Johann Mann in 1857. Description The wingspan is about . It is similar in appearance to the Nearctic '' Tebenna gnaphaliella'' and can be found between June and August. It comes to light and can be found during the day on the flowers of the larval foodplant. The larvae feed on Asteraceae within a blotch, sometimes leaving the mine and starting another. Later instars can live freely in a web on the leaf. Larval foodplants recorded include, on common fleabane (''Pulicaria dysenterica'') in the United Kingdom. Brenthia Leptocosma
''Brenthia leptocosma'' is a species of moth of the family Choreutidae. It is found on Mauritius and Réunion in the Indian Ocean. This species has a wingspan of 8–9 mm, the head is bronzy-fuscous with a white line above the eyes. The thorax is bronzy-fuscous with five fine white longitudinal lines. The abdomen is dark fuscous. Forewings are elongate-triangular, costa gently arched, dark bronzy-fuscous, irregularly irrorated (speckled) with white and white dots on costa beyond. There is a series of eight small rounded-oblong spots round apex and termen, each centered with a violet-metallic dot. The hindwings are rather dark-fuscous, with a small oblique-oval whitish spot in the middle of the disc, a fine violet-blue-metallic line just before termen from apex to below middle, followed by three or four black spots. This species is similar to '' Brenthia cyanaula'' in markings, but the palpi are quite different and characteristic. Host plants of this species are Boraginaceae ...
