Montana
Montana () is a state in the Mountain West division of the Western United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the west, North Dakota and South Dakota to the east, Wyoming to the south, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan to the north. It is the fourth-largest state by area, the eighth-least populous state, and the third-least densely populated state. Its state capital is Helena. The western half of Montana contains numerous mountain ranges, while the eastern half is characterized by western prairie terrain and badlands, with smaller mountain ranges found throughout the state. Butte, Montana
Butte ( ) is a consolidated city-county and the county seat of Silver Bow County, Montana, United States. In 1977, the city and county governments consolidated to form the sole entity of Butte-Silver Bow. The city covers , and, according to the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, has a population of 34,494, making it Montana's List of municipalities in Montana, fifth largest city. It is served by Bert Mooney Airport with airport code BTM. Established in 1864 as a mining camp in the northern Rocky Mountains on the Continental Divide of the Americas, Continental Divide, Butte experienced rapid development in the late-nineteenth century, and was Montana's first major industrial city. Clara McAdow
Clara Coltrin Tomlinson McAdow (1838 – January 19, 1896) was an American women's suffragist and a mine owner in Montana. Biography McAdow was born Clara Coltrin in Ohio, the eldest of eight children born to Joseph and Annie Coltrin. She grew up in Jackson, Michigan. McAdow moved to Coulson, Montana, with her first husband Dr. C. E. Tomlinson. She got a job with Northern Pacific Railroad and did side jobs including a check-cashing business because there was not yet a bank in Billings, Montana. When Tomlinson died, she took their savings and invested in real estate in Billings. She met Perry W. McAdow through her real estate ventures and purchased the Spotted Horse mine from him, which he had received as payment for a debt. Clara took charge of all aspects of the mine, directing all of its operations and often living on site. The mine, which she purchased for $11,000, was sold in 1890 for $500,000. Flathead County is in the U.S. state of Montana. At the 2020 census, its population was 104,357, making it the state's fourth most populous county. Its county seat is Kalispell. Its numerical designation (used in the issuance of license plates) is 7. Its northern border is on the state's north border, making it contiguous with the Canada–US border, facing British Columbia. Flathead County comprises the Kalispell, Montana Micropolitan Statistical Area, with neighboring Lake County following soon after. History Flathead County was founded in 1893. Hazel Hunkins Hallinan
Hazel Hunkins Hallinan (née Hunkins; June 6, 1890 – May 17, 1982) was an American women's rights activist, journalist, and suffragist. Early life and education Hunkins Hallinan was born on June 6, 1890, in Aspen, Colorado, and grew up in Billings, Montana. She was the only daughter of Lewis Hunkins, a jeweller, watchmaker, and civil war veteran, and an Englishwoman, Ann Whittingham. Hunkins earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Vassar College. She then lectured in chemistry to freshmen at the University of Missouri for three years, whilst beginning a master's degree in chemistry, but was denied promotion despite being better qualified than her male colleagues. Her career was impacted when she was expected to return home to nurse her critically ill mother. Hunkins applied for a chemistry teaching post at Billings high school but was told that only men would be considered for the post, although she accepted a botany and geography position. Ravalli County, Montana
Ravalli County is a county in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 44,174. Its county seat is Hamilton. Ravalli County is part of a north–south mountain valley bordered by the Sapphire Mountains on the East and the Bitterroot Mountains on the West. It is often referred to as the Bitterroot Valley, which is named for the Bitterroot Flower. The county is on the Pacific Ocean side of the Continental Divide, which follows the Idaho-Montana border from Wyoming until Ravalli County.
