Alexandru Văsescu
Alexandru is the Romanian form of the name Alexander. Common diminutives are Alecu, Alex, and Sandu. Origin Etymologically, the name is derived from the Greek "Αλέξανδρος" (Aléxandros), meaning "defending men" or "protector of men", a compound of the verb "ἀλέξω" (alexō), "to ward off, to avert, to defend" and the noun "ἀνδρός" (andros), genitive of "ἀνήρ" (anēr), "man". It is an example of the widespread motif of Greek (or Indo-European more generally) names expressing "battle-prowess", in this case the ability to withstand or push back an enemy battle line. Constantin Nacu
Constantin Nacu (June 29, 1844 – February 20, 1920) was a Wallachian, later Romanian politician. Born into a ''boyar'' family in Bucharest, he studied law at the University of Bucharest, later obtaining a law doctorate from the University of Paris. He entered the magistracy, first as a prosecutor and counsel for the Bucharest Appeals Court, and then in the private practice of law. In 1879, he was hired as a professor of civil law by his alma mater. He entered the National Liberal Party (PNL) in 1880. In 1882, party members began discussing modifications to the 1866 Constitution that would have the effect of weakening the Conservative Party's electoral strength. In the spring of 1883, an election was held for the legislature tasked with approving the modifications; it was then that Nacu won his first seat in the Assembly of Deputies. Gheorghe Lecca
Gheorghe Lecca (10 April 1831–30 August 1885) was a Moldavian-born Romanian politician. Born in Bacău, he was the son of ''paharnic'' (royal cup-bearer) Gheorghe Lecca (reportedly a descendant of Leca of Cătun), who died the year after the son was born; and of Maria Negură. Together with his brothers Ioan and Dimitrie, he attended the Cavalry School at Saumur. After returning home in 1854, he took part in the Crimean War. After leaving army service, he served as prefect of Bacău County in 1866, and then as deputy and senator. Nicolae Dabija (15 August 1837, Huși. Vaslui County, Moldavia – 1 December 1884, Paris) was a Romanian general and politician. Born in Huși, in 1837, he attended the Academia Mihăileană in Iași. In 1858 he was sent to France to attend the School of Applied Artillery in Metz. Christian Tell (January 12, 1808 - February 4/16, 1884) was a Transylvanian-born Wallachian and Romanian general and politician. Life and activity He was born in Brașov on January 12, 1808. He studied at the Saint Sava National College in Bucharest, where he had Gheorghe Lazăr and Ion Heliade Rădulescu as teachers. He was influenced by Ion Heliade Rădulescu, sharing his moderate approach, regarding the national affirmation of Romanians. Christian Tell was enrolled in the military forces of the Ottoman Empire, fighting in the Russo-Turkish War (1828–29), where he received the rank of captain. In 1830, he entered the newly formed army of the Romanian Country, constantly advancing in the military ranks. In 1834 he married Târșița Ștefănescu, the daughter of a small Oltic boyar. Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino
Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino (22 September 1833 – 22 March 1913), was a Romanian politician and lawyer, one of the leading Conservative Party policymakers. Among his political posts were minister of public instruction in Romania, president of the chamber, and president of the senate. He twice served as the Prime Minister of Romania: between 23 April 1899 and 19 July 1900, and between 4 January 1906 and 24 March 1907. He resigned from office after failing to put down the large-scale peasants' revolt. He was the 20th Romanian politician to serve as Prime Minister. The wealthy Cantacuzino was born into the aristocratic Cantacuzino family, of Phanariote origins. He built the Cantacuzino Palace of Bucharest and the Cantacuzino Castle of Bușteni. Constantin Grădișteanu
Constantin Grădișteanu (17 September 1833–10 April 1890) was a Wallachian-born Romanian politician. Descended from an old ''boyar'' family, his father was Șerban Grădișteanu. He studied at Paris, earning a degree in literature from the Sorbonne in 1852 and then attending the law faculty. In February 1866, he was named prefect of Ilfov County before being transferred to a similar post in Putna County the following month. A conservative, he was part of the constituent assembly in 1866, the same year he was first elected to the Assembly of Deputies. In 1876, he was sent to the senate. From April to December 1870, Grădișteanu served as Finance Minister in the cabinet of Manolache Costache Epureanu.
