List Of Michigan State Prisons
This is a list of current and former state prisons and minimum security prison camps in Michigan. It does not include federal prisons or county jails located in that State. All facilities not otherwise indicated are facilities for men. Michigan State Prison (also called the Jackson Prison) was the first state prison, built in 1842. A larger prison building was built in 1926 and used until 2007. It was reorganized into separate prisons in 1988. The Detroit House of Corrections, built in 1861, was owned and run by the city of Detroit but originally accepted prisoners from throughout the state including women. The Detroit House of Corrections was transferred to the state in 1986, renamed to Western Wayne Correctional Facility, and became a women's facility for the rest of its tenure. It eventually closed in December 2004 and all inmates and staff were transferred to the Huron Valley Complex in Ypsilanti. Mid-Michigan Correctional Facility
Central Michigan Correctional Facility (STF) is a Michigan prison for male Level I prisoners. History The prison was opened in 1990 and was previously known as the Mid-Michigan Correctional Facility and Pine River Correctional Facility until they were consolidated on October 17, 2010. Facility The Central Michigan Correctional Facility consists of eight housing buildings which provide sixteen separate housing units. Each housing units consist of 7-8 bed open bays, with 140-160 prisoners. The housing units can hold 2400 Secure Level I prisoners, who are more easily managed within the facility (even though they may have committed violent crimes) than higher level prisoners. There are separate buildings for administration, foodservice, academic programs, maintenance in a warehouse, and prisoner services. Adrian, Michigan
Adrian is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Lenawee County. The population was 20,645 at the 2020 census. Adrian lies in Michigan's 7th congressional district. History Adrian was founded on June 18, 1826 by Addison Comstock. The original name for the village was Logan, but was changed soon after to Adrian, perhaps in reference to the Roman emperor Hadrian. The first operating railroad in Michigan was a horse-drawn train running between Adrian and Toledo in 1836. Adrian grew quickly, with the sixth largest population in the state when Michigan was admitted to the Union in 1837, and the third largest population in the state by 1860. Gus Harrison Correctional Facility
Gus Harrison Correctional Facility (ARF) is a Michigan prison, in Adrian, for adult male prisoners. History The prison was opened in 1991 and is named after the Michigan Department of Corrections's first director, Gus Harrison. On August 9, 2009, Parr Highway Correctional Facility was consolidated into Gus Harrison Correctional Facility. In early 2021, the facility was fined $6,300 over serious violations of Coronavirus regulations. At the time 187 employees had tested positive to the virus and one had died; in addition, 1465 prisoners tested positive and seven had died. The Cooper Street Correctional Facility is a minimum-security state prison for men located in Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan, owned and operated by the Michigan Department of Corrections. The facility was created from the former grounds of the Michigan Parole Camp, which was across the street from the former Michigan State Prison. Kincheloe, Michigan
Kincheloe is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Chippewa County on the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan, named after the former Kincheloe Air Force Base, that was in turn named after noted pilot Iven Kincheloe. Kincheloe is at the eastern end of Kinross Charter Township, just east of Interstate 75 (I-75) and about southwest of Sault Ste. Marie and north of St. Ignace. Chippewa Correctional Facility (URF) is a prison for men located in the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan and part of the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).
