List Of Mexican Submissions For Academy Award For Best Foreign Language Film
Mexico has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1957. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The award was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. Mexico has submitted fifty-four films for Oscar consideration over the years, and nine Mexican films have been nominated by the Academy for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Alfonso Cuarón Orozco ( , ; born 28 November 1961) is a Mexican filmmaker. He is known for directing films in a variety of genres including the family drama ''A Little Princess'' (1995), the romantic drama ''Great Expectations'' (1998), the coming of age road film ''Y tu mamá también'' (2001), the fantasy film ''Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban'' (2004), the science fiction films ''Children of Men'' (2006) and ''Gravity'' (2013), the semi-autobiographical drama ''Roma'' (2018), and the 2009 short ''I Am Autism''. 30th Academy Awards
The 30th Academy Awards ceremony was held on March 26, 1958, to honor the best films of 1957. The Oscar for Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium was awarded to Pierre Boulle for ''The Bridge on the River Kwai'', despite the fact that he did not know English. The actual writers, Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson were blacklisted at the time and did not receive screen credit for their work. Foreman and Wilson have since been acknowledged by the Academy for their contributions. The 35th Academy Awards, honoring the best in film for 1962, were held on April 8, 1963, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California, hosted by Frank Sinatra. Ceremony The Best Actress Oscar occasioned the last act of the long-running feud between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. They had starred together for the first time in '' What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?'', a surprise hit the previous summer. Davis was nominated for her role as the title character, a faded child star who humiliates the wheelchair-using sister who eclipsed her fame in adulthood, while Crawford was not. ''Ánimas Trujano'' (''El hombre importante'') (''The Important Man'') is a 1962 Mexican drama film directed by Ismael Rodríguez, based on a novel by Rogelio Barriga Rivas. It stars Toshiro Mifune, Columba Domínguez, Flor Silvestre, and Antonio Aguilar. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Plot The film's setting is a town in Oaxaca during the festival of its patron saint, for which the church appoints a layman as ''mayordomo'' or steward, an honor that in effect is gained by being able to organize and cover the high costs of most of the saint's local festivities. ''Nazarín'' (, ) is a 1959 Mexican satirical drama film directed by Luis Buñuel and co-written between Buñuel and Julio Alejandro, adapted from the eponymous novel of Benito Pérez Galdós. The film received the international prize at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as the Mexican entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 32nd Academy Awards, but was not selected as a nominee.
