Luis Mandoki
Luis Mandoki (born August 17, 1954) is a Mexican film director working in Mexico and Cinema of the United States, Hollywood. Luis Mandoki studied Fine Arts in Mexico and at the San Francisco Art Institute, the London College of Printing, and the London International Film School. While attending this last institution he directed his first short film ''Silent Music'' which won an award at the International Amateur Film Festival of Cannes Film Festival in 1976. Back in Mexico he directed short films and documentaries for the Instituto Nacional Indigenista (the National Institute for the Indigenous), Conacine (National Commission of Film) and the Centro de Produccion de Cortometraje (Center for the Production of Short Films). In 1980 he received an Ariel Award of the Mexican Academy of Film for his short film ''El secreto''. ''¿Quién es el señor López?'' (Spanish for "Who is Mr. Lopez?") is a 2006 film made by film director Luis Mandoki. It is a political non-fiction film about the 2006 and 2012 Mexican presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the 2006 Mexican general election. The five-DVD documentary includes interviews with López Obrador and with journalists and academics, including Denise Dresser (ITAM), Lorenzo Meyer (COLMEX); the lawyers Néstor de Buen, Javier Quijano and Juventino Castro y Castro, all of them sympathizers with the Revolutionary Democratic Party of the candidate. 2006 Cannes Film Festival
The 59th Cannes Film Festival was held from 17 to 28 May 2006. Twenty films from eleven countries were in competition for the Palme d'Or. The President of the Official selection Jury was Wong Kar-wai, the first Chinese director to preside over the jury. English director Ken Loach won the Palme d'Or with his movie '' The Wind That Shakes the Barley''. Other winners were Pedro Almodóvar (Best Screenplay, ''Volver'') and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Best Director, ''Babel''). This also marked the first time in three years that no American film, actor, actress, or filmmaker won any awards in Cannes.
