Knesset
The Knesset ( he, הַכְּנֶסֶת ; "gathering" or "assembly") is the unicameral legislature of Israel. As the supreme state body, the Knesset is sovereign and thus has complete control of the entirety of the Israeli government (with the exception of checks and balances from the courts and local governments). The Knesset passes all laws, elects the president and prime minister (although the latter is ceremonially appointed by the President), approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government, among other things. In addition, the Knesset elects the state comptroller. It also has the power to waive the immunity of its members, remove the president and the state comptroller from office, dissolve the government in a constructive vote of no confidence, and to dissolve itself and call new elections. Israel Labor Party
The Israeli Labor Party ( he, מִפְלֶגֶת הָעֲבוֹדָה הַיִּשְׂרְאֵלִית, ), commonly known as HaAvoda ( he, הָעֲבוֹדָה, , The Labor), is a social democratic and Zionist political party in Israel. The party was established in 1968 by a merger of Mapai, Ahdut HaAvoda, and Rafi. Until 1977, all Israeli Prime Ministers were affiliated with the Labor movement. The current party leader is Merav Michaeli, who was elected in January 2021. Eli Ben-Menachem ( he, אלי בן-מנחם, born 24 November 1947) is a former Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Alignment, the Labor Party and One Israel between 1988 and 2006. Biography Born in Bombay, India (today Mumbai), Ben-Menachem immigrated to Israel in 1949. He studied at a military academy, and worked as an aircraft technician, eventually becoming chairman of the El Al workers' union. In 1988 he was elected to the Knesset on the Alignment list. After being re-elected in 1992 (this time on the Labor Party list), he was appointed Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office on 4 August 1992. On 8 April 1993 he became Deputy Minister of Housing and Construction, a post he held until Binyamin Netanyahu formed a Likud-led government in 1996. Ehud Barak
Ehud Barak ( he-a, אֵהוּד בָּרָק, Ehud_barak.ogg, link=yes, born Ehud Brog; 12 February 1942) is an Israeli general and politician who served as the tenth prime minister from 1999 to 2001. He was leader of the Labor Party until January 2011. Efraim Sneh
Efraim Sneh ( he, אפרים סנה, born 19 September 1944) is an Israeli politician, physician, and a retired brigadier general in the Israel Defense Forces. He was a member of the Knesset for the Labor Party between 1992 and 2008 and served in several ministerial posts. He currently heads the Yisrael Hazaka party, which he established in May 2008. Life and career Born in Tel Aviv in 1944, Sneh is the son of Moshe Sneh, who was one of the heads of the Haganah. His father was elected to the first Knesset as a representative of Mapam, before defecting to Maki, the Israeli Communist Party. Sneh served in the Nahal infantry battalion from 1962 to 1964. Efi Oshaya ( he, אפי אושעיה, born 2 June 1956) is an Israeli politician and a former member of the Knesset for the Labor Party. Biography Oshaya was born in Israel and completed his military service with the IDF's Air Force with the rank of First Sergeant. He later completed a degree in business management at Lexington University in England. His political activity included his election as chairman of the Histadrut in Netanya and as a member of Netanya's local council. In 1996, he was first elected to the Knesset and served as the Labor's group whip. David Libai ( he, דוד ליבאי, born 22 October 1934) is an Israeli jurist and former politician. He was a member of the Knesset for Israeli Labor Party, Labour from 1984 to 1996, and served as Justice Minister of Israel, Minister of Justice from 1992 to 1996. Dalia Itzik ( he, דליה איציק ''Dalya Itsik''; born 20 October 1952) is a former Israeli politician who last served as a member of the Knesset for Kadima. She has previously served in several ministerial positions, and on 4 May 2006 became the first female speaker of the Knesset, and served as President of Israel in an interim capacity in July 2007. She was the first acting President to have been born in Israeli territory after independence in 1948. Biography Itzik was born in Jerusalem. Her parents were Iraqi Jews who had immigrated to Israel. Binyamin "Fuad" Ben-Eliezer (, he, בנימין "פואד" בן אליעזר; 12 February 1936 – 28 August 2016) was an Iraqi-born Israeli politician and general. He served as a member of the Knesset between 1984 and 2014, and held several ministerial posts, including Minister of Industry, Trade and Labour; Minister of Defense; and Deputy Prime Minister. Avraham "Avi" Yehezkel ( he, אברהם "אבי" יחזקאל, born 10 June 1958) is a former Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Labor Party between 1992 and 2003, and again briefly in 2006. Avraham Shochat ( he, אברהם שוחט, born 14 June 1936) is an Israeli former politician who twice served as Minister of Finance. He served as mayor of Arad for 20 years. Biography Avraham ("Beiga") Shochat was born in Tel Aviv during the Mandate era. After serving in the Israel Defense Forces as a corporal in the Nahal paratroopers, he attended the Technion, where he gained a BSc in Civil engineering, also being elected chairman of the university's Student Union during his studies.
