Red Deer, Alberta
Red Deer is a city in Alberta, Canada, located midway on the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor. Red Deer serves central Alberta, and key industries include health care, retail trade, construction, oil and gas, hospitality, manufacturing and education. It is surrounded by Red Deer County and borders on Lacombe County. The city is located in aspen parkland, a region of rolling hills, alongside the Red Deer River. History The area was inhabited by First Nations including the Blackfoot, Plains Cree and Stoney before the arrival of European fur traders in the late eighteenth century. A First Nations trail ran from the Montana Territory across the Bow River near present-day Calgary and on to Fort Edmonton, later known as the Calgary and Edmonton Trail. The trail crossed the Red Deer River at a wide, stony shallows. The "Old Red Deer Crossing" is upstream from the present-day city. Cree people called the river , which means "Elk River." Edward Michener
Edward Michener (August 18, 1869 – June 16, 1947) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and senator from Alberta. Early life Edward Michener was born on August 18, 1867, to Jacob and Eliza Michener in Tintern, Ontario. He was educated at St. Catharines Collegiate Institute and post-secondary studies at Victoria University, University of Toronto and Wesley College. He was married to Mary E. Roland on September 15, 1897, and together had four sons and four daughters. Michener's son Roland Michener served as Governor General of Canada. Political life Michener was acclaimed as mayor of Red Deer, District of Alberta, in the 1904 mayoral race. He held that position for two terms until 1906. George Wilbert Smith
George Wilbert Smith (April 24, 1855 – August 1, 1931) was a teacher, businessman and politician in Alberta, Canada. He served on the Red Deer City Council and in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1921 until his death in 1931 sitting with the United Farmers caucus in government. Early life George Wilbert Smith was born in 1855 in the town of Maitland, Nova Scotia. He moved to the Northwest Territories and settled in the Red Deer area in 1883. Smith became the first school teacher in central Alberta. Smith was also a business man. He founded and served as a director on the Smith Lead Company Ltd. and also served on the board of directors for the Western General Electric Company. Kenneth Charles Johnston (born c. 1954) is a Canadian politician. He has served as the mayor of Red Deer, Alberta since 2021. Early life Originally from Newfoundland, Johnston moved to Alberta in 1980. He moved to Red Deer in 1996. Before entering politics, Johnston worked for 40 years as a personal financial planner with Scotiabank. He is the past president of the Red Deer Rotary Club. Electoral career In May 2013, Johnston announced he was running for a seat on Red Deer City Council in the October 2013 Red Deer municipal election. Johnston was elected to the eight-seat body, winning over 7,000 votes, finishing sixth in the at-large race. During his first term as councillor, Johnston cited the economic downturn that the province had in 2015 was one of the council's greatest challenges.
