Prescott, Arizona
Prescott ( ) is a city in Yavapai County, Arizona, United States. According to the 2020 Census, the city's population was 45,827. The city is the county seat of Yavapai County. In 1864, Prescott was designated as the capital of the Arizona Territory, replacing the temporary capital of Fort Whipple. The Territorial Capital was moved to Tucson in 1867. Prescott again became the Territorial Capital in 1877, until Phoenix became the capital in 1889. Prescott has a rich history as a frontier gold and silver mining town. Mining and settlers brought frequent conflict with native American tribes in the area, including the Yavapai and Apache. Prescott was the home to Fort Whipple from its inception, which acted as a base for campaigns against natives. Morris Goldwater
Morris Goldwater (January 16, 1852 – April 11, 1939) was an American businessman and politician. Background Goldwater was born in London, England. In 1854, Goldwater and his family emigrated to the United States and settled in San Francisco, California. In 1867, Goldwater moved to La Paz, Arizona Territory to work in the mercantile business. Eventually, Goldwater moved to Prescott, Arizona Territory and opened the M. Goldwater & Bros. Store with his brothers Baron and Henry. Goldwater served on the Prescott City Council and as mayor. He also served on the Yavapai County, Arizona Board of Supervisors and was involved with the Democratic Party. Goldwater served on the board of school examiners for Yavapai County. Sumner Howard
Sumner Howard (May 7, 1835September 6, 1890) was an American jurist and politician who served as Chief Justice on the Arizona Territorial Supreme Court, Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives, and Mayor of Prescott, Arizona Territory. Biography Howard was born on May 7, 1835, to Waldo and Mary Howard in Brockport, New York. In the year following his birth, his family moved to Flint, Michigan. He was educated in public schools. At age fifteen, Howard began working in local newspaper offices; first at the ''Genesee Democrat'' and later the ''Wolverine Citizen''. When he was 19, Howard began reading law at a local law office. Soon after, he enrolled at the State and National Law School in Poughkeepsie, New York, and graduated in either 1855 or 1856. Following graduation, Howard returned to Michigan and became a defense attorney. Buckey O'Neill
William Owen "Buckey" O'Neill (February 2, 1860 – July 1, 1898) was a sheriff, newspaper editor, miner, politician, Georgist, gambler and lawyer, mainly in Arizona. His nickname came from his tendency to "buck the tiger" (play contrary to the odds) at faro or other card games. He later became a captain in Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, and died in battle. Early life O'Neill was born the first of four children on February 2, 1860, to John Owen and Mary (McMenimin) O'Neill in St. Louis, Missouri. His father was an Irish immigrant who had most likely arrived in the United States during the 1850s. By Spring 1862, the family had moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When the American Civil War began the elder O'Neill joined the 116th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Sam Steiger
Samuel Steiger (March 10, 1929September 26, 2012) was an American politician, journalist, political pundit. He served five terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, two terms in the Arizona State Senate, and one term as mayor of Prescott, Arizona. Steiger also made an unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate, served as a special assistant to Arizona Governor Evan Mecham, and hosted political talk shows on both radio and television. Despite these accomplishments, Steiger is best known for two incidents: The first, while he was a sitting Congressman, was the 1975 killing of two burros. Marlin Kuykendall
Marlin Kuykendall (1934/35 – January 17, 2021) was a mayor of Prescott, Arizona. Personal Kuykendall was married to Tana, and has three sons. On November 11, 2010, while waiting to judge a parade, Kuykendall suffered a heart attack but later recovered. He died on January 17, 2021, from cancer. Business Experience Kuykendall opened the town's first Toyota dealership and later acquired the Buick Pontiac and GMC franchises there as well. He also built the Antelope Hills Inn, and ran it himself until 2007. Military service Kuykendall enlisted in the Arizona Army National Guard in 1953 and was put on active duty with the U.S. Army in 1956.
