Jeffersonville is a city and the county seat of Clark County, Indiana, Clark County, Indiana, United States, situated along the Ohio River. Locally, the city is often referred to by the abbreviated name Jeff. It lies directly across the Ohio River to the north of Louisville, Kentucky, along Interstate 65 in Kentucky, I-65. The population was 49,447 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. Jeffersonville began its existence as a settlement around Fort Finney after 1786 and was named after Thomas Jefferson in 1801, the year he took office. Richard Vissing
Richard Vissing (1915–1987) was mayor of Jeffersonville, Indiana. He served five terms from 1964 to 1983, making him one of the longest serving mayors in the state, and was the city's first full-time mayor. During his terms as mayor he was credited for helping revitalize the city, built the new city-county building and added parks to the city such as River City Park, now named Vissing Park in his honor. One of the notable accomplishments was the purchasing of original Jeffersonville's Ken Ellis Center (A Community Shelter) during the 1970s which was originally a tavern, in 2004 the original building was destroyed by a tornado. Vissing was born Feb. 22, 1915 where he lived and died in, and for, Jeffersonville. His father, John, built Vissings Dodge (Studebaker, Renault, etc.) in 1928. Tom Galligan (mayor)
Thomas R. Galligan (born August 6, 1946) is a former three-term mayor of Jeffersonville, Indiana, United States, serving from 1996 to 2003 and again from 2008 to 2011. Galligan succeeded incumbent Raymond Parker Jr. in the 1995 mayoral election and was unseated by challenger, Rob Waiz, during the 2003 election. Galligan defeated Waiz during the 2007 election and was defeated by Clark County Commissioner, Mike Moore, during the 2011 election. Biography Galligan graduated from Providence High School's class of 1964 in Clarksville, Indiana and then went to Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky for two years before leaving in 1966 and then attended economic development training conferences.
