List Of Mayors Of Colombo
The Mayor of Colombo is the Mayor (and head) of the Colombo Municipal Council. The post was created in 1866 when the Colombo Municipal Council was established by the Legislative Council of Ceylon. The Mayor is assisted by the Deputy Mayor and a Municipal Commissioner. Since 1944 the majority of the mayors have been from the United National Party. Election The mayor is elected in a general election held under the ''Local Authority Election Ordinance'' from the party gaining the highest number of seats in the municipal council. Once elected the mayor may hold office for four years. Powers and functions Most powers are derived from the ''Municipal Council Ordinance No. 29 of 1947''. Rosy Senanayake
Bernadine Rose Senanayake, JP, UM (known as ''Rosy Senanayake'') (née Ramanayake; born 5 January 1958) is a Sri Lankan politician, a former beauty queen and also an activist. She is the current Mayor of Colombo, and former Prime Minister's Spokesperson and the Deputy Head of the Prime Minister's Office for Ranil Wickramasinghe. She has been an activist on several issues and an active figure in the opposition gaining much limelight. Rosy Senanayake was the former state minister for child development under President Maithripala Sirisena. She was also the leader of the opposition in Western Provincial Council and the chief organizer of United National Party for the Colombo West electorate. The ''Daily News'' is an English-language newspaper in Sri Lanka. It is now published by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Lake House), a government-owned corporation. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. Sri Lanka Freedom Party
