The City of Cockburn ( ) is a local government area in the southern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth about south of Fremantle and about south of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and had a population of over 104,000 as at the 2016 Census. History Cockburn is named after Cockburn Sound, which was named in 1827 by Captain James Stirling after Admiral Sir George Cockburn. Sir George was born in London in 1772 and was a renowned British naval officer, eventually becoming Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord. He served under Horatio Nelson during the war with France, but came to public attention and was granted his knighthood for his service in the War of 1812, in particular for the burning of Washington in 1814. It was he who took Napoleon to exile on the island of Saint Helena after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Edward Higham
Edward Henry Higham (26 July 1846 – 20 April 1885) was a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1880 to 1884. Life The son of a baker, Edward Higham was born in Brackley, Northamptonshire, England (one source says Oxfordshire) on 26 July 1846. In 1853 his family emigrated to Western Australia, settling in Fremantle and opening a bakery and confectionery shop. After the death of his father, Higham left school in 1859 to help his mother, Mary Higham run the shop. By 1870 his mother had created a second business ''M. Higham and Sons'', selling clothing and furnishing and Edward became a partner in the firm. From 1870 on, Higham became increasingly involved in public life. In 1871 he became the chairman of the Fremantle Roads Board at a meeting at his mother's house. This committee was to become important in time and is seen today as the start of the City of Cockburn. Henry Maxwell Lefroy
Henry Maxwell Lefroy (August 1818 – 18 July 1879) was a prominent explorer of the Mid West and Goldfields-Esperance regions of Western Australia. He was the son of Rev. John Henry George Lefroy, the rector of Compton and Ashe, who died when his son was five, leaving his widow and nine other children. He had studied at Guildford Grammar School in Surrey, where he became acquainted with the Stirling family and first developed an interest in the Swan River Colony in Western Australia. He later studied at Oxford University and had many conversations with the son of Captain Yates, who furthered his interest in the colony. Lefroy arrived in the colony in 1841 and took up land in York. He left York in 1843 with Henry Landor on an expedition, accompanied by 10 year old aboriginal boy, Cowits or Kowitch to translate. They crossed the Hotham River and went on to discover and name Kowitch Pool and the Lefroy River, and then returned after a fortnight. He returned to England to serve ... William Silas Pearse
William Silas Pearse (21 May 1838 – 30 December 1908) was an Australian businessman, pastoralist, and politician who served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1872 to 1880 and again from 1884 to 1890, and then a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1890 to 1895. Early life Pearse was born in Fremantle to Susannah (née Glyde) and William Silas Pearse Sr., his parents both being early arrivals to the Swan River Colony. After being educated privately, he went into partnership with his brother (George Pearse), opening a butchery and tannery in Fremantle. They later diversified the business into ship-owning and importing. In 1866, Pearse was elected to the Fremantle Town Trust. He was re-elected in 1868, and appointed chairman. Arthur Davies (politician)
Arthur Elvin Davies (7 May 1867 – 27 March 1918) was an Australian businessman and politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1906 to 1911, representing the seat of South Fremantle. Davies was born in Fremantle to Hannah Elizabeth (née Williams) and Alfred Alexander Davies. Two of his older brothers, George Alfred and Edward William Davies, served as Mayor of Fremantle. Before entering politics himself, Davies was a cabinet maker and upholsterer who eventually set up as a furniture importer. In November 1889, he also established an undertaking firm.
