The city government of Chelsea, Massachusetts was incorporated in 1857. From 1739 to 1857, Chelsea was incorporated as a town. From 1857 to 1991 (with the exception of 1908 to 1911), the city's head of government was the mayor of Chelsea. The office of mayor ceased to exist after the city went into receivership. Since 1995, Chelsea has been led by a city manager. Town government Chelsea was settled as part of Boston in 1624 by Samuel Maverick under the name of ''Winnisimmet'' (meaning "good spring nearby"). In 1739, Winnisimmet, along with the settlements Rumney Marsh, and Pullen Point (excluding Hog Island and Noddle's Island) was incorporated as a town. Upon its incorporation the town named after Chelsea, a neighborhood in London, England. Under this form of government, Chelsea was governed by a Town Meeting and Board of Selectmen. Chelsea High School (Massachusetts)
The Chelsea High School is located in Chelsea, Massachusetts, United States and is the only public high school in Chelsea. It is a part of Chelsea Public Schools. Established in 1845, Chelsea High moved into its current school building in 1996. Chelsea High School is located at 299 Everett Avenue, Chelsea, Massachusetts 02150. Clubs provided are Drama Club, GSA (Gay Straight Alliance), Journalism, German, Science, Art, Multicultural, Reach program, among others. Athletics provided are Football, Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Soccer, Volleyball, Track, Cross Country and Cheerleading. School colors are Red, Black, and White. Thomas Strahan
Thomas Strahan (May 10, 1847 – December 19, 1910) was a Massachusetts businessman and politician who served as the thirteenth Mayor of Chelsea, Massachusetts and in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Biography Thomas Straham was born in Stirling, Scotland on May 10, 1847. He was educated at the Cotting Academy in Arlington, Virginia, and at Phillips Exeter Academy. He married Esther Lawrence on November 28, 1867, and they had six children. A Republican, he served on the Common Council of Chelsea, Massachusetts from 1880 to 1883, and was its president in the latter year. He was elected Chelsea's mayor in 1883, and was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1884.
