Mayor (France)
In France, a mayor (french: maire), (Occitan language, Occitan: ''cònsol)'' is chairperson of the Municipal council (France), municipal council, which organises the work and deliberates on municipal matters. The mayor also has significant powers and their own responsibilities, such as the responsibility for the activities of Municipal Police (France), municipal police and for the management of municipal staff. The officeholder is also the representative of the Nation, state in the commune. As such, the mayor is a civil officer of the State (''Officier d'état civil'') and judiciary police officer (''Officier de police judiciaire''). The term period of office for a mayor is six years. Jassuda Bédarrides
Jassuda Bédarrides (2 April 1804 – 4 February 1882) was a French lawyer and politician. He served as the Mayor of Aix-en-Provence from 1848 to 1849. As such, he was the first Jewish Mayor of this city. Biography Early life Jassuda Bédarrides was born in a Jewish family on April 2, 1804, in Aix-en-Provence.Charles Cohen, ''Les Grandes Figures du barreau d'Aix-en-Provence'', Paris: Société des Écrivains, 2004, p. 154. He had a brother, Salomon Bédarrides, who went on to serve as the mayor of Aix-en-Provence from 1877 to 1884. He also had a sister, Précieuse Bédarrides, who married Abraham Abram, a Jewish businessman from Marseille; their son, Benjamin Abram (1846-1938), went on to serve as the mayor of Aix-en-Provence from 1888 to 1896. Salomon Bédarrides (1809–1886) was a French lawyer and politician. He served as the mayor of Aix-en-Provence from 1877 to 1884. Biography Early life Salomon Bédarrides was born in a Jewish family on 18 February 1809 in Aix-en-Provence. His brother, Jassuda Bédarrides (1804-1882), served as the mayor of Aix from 1858 to 1859. Career He started his career as a lawyer in Aix. A supporter of the Republic, he decided to follow in his brother's footsteps and embark upon a career in politics. He was left-wing, and a Freemason. He was elected to the town council in 1870. He served as the mayor of Aix-en-Provence from 1877 to 1884. As such, he was the second Jewish Mayor of this city, the first being his brother. One of his first decisions, taken on 8 November 1876, was to rename the Cours Mirabeau as such. He reduced the debt the town has incurred and purchased more books for the public library.
