Malayalam
Malayalam (; , ) is a Dravidian language spoken in the Indian state of Kerala and the union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry (Mahé district) by the Malayali people. It is one of 22 scheduled languages of India. Malayalam was designated a "Classical Language of India" in 2013. Malayalam has official language status in Kerala, and Puducherry ( Mahé), and is also the primary spoken language of Lakshadweep, and is spoken by 34 million people in India. Changampuzha Krishna Pillai
Changampuzha Krishna Pillai (Malayalam: ചങ്ങമ്പുഴ കൃഷ്ണപിള്ള; 10 October 1911 – 17 June 1948) was a celebrated Malayalam poet from Kerala, India, known for his elegy ''Ramanan'' (Malayalam: രമണന്‍) which was written in 1936 and sold over 100,000 copies. It is a long pastoral elegy, a play written in the form of verse, allegedly based on the life of Changampuzha's friend Edappally Raghavan Pillai. It is also adapted into a movie in 1967. He is credited with bringing poetry to the masses with his simple romantic style. He died of tuberculosis aged 36. His style influenced the next few generations of Malayalam poetry, notable among them was Vayalar Ramavarma, famous Malayalam lyricist. A movie based on the life history of Changampuzha is in the planning stage. Kureepuzha Sreekumar (born 10 April 1955 in Kureepuzha, Kollam, Kerala) is a noted Malayalam poet with modernist inclinations. His books of poetry include ''Habibinte Dinakkurippukal'', his first, published in 1984, ''Sreekumarinte Dukkangal'', ''Rahulan Urangunnilla'', ''Amma Malayalam'', Keezhaalan and ''Suicide Point''. He is an atheist. Career as Writer He won the Best Poet Award in 1975 from Kerala University, the 1987 Vyloppilli Award for Malayalam poetry, and the Kerala Sahithya Akademi Sree Padmanabhaswamy Award for 2003 for the best work in children's literature for his work ''Penangunni''. He refused to accept the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Award as it was named after a Hindu God. Kadathanat Madhavi Amma (15 June 1909 – 24 December 1999) was an Indian poet, novelist and short story writer of Malayalam literature. Known for poetry anthologies such as ''Kalyopaharam'' and ''Kanikkonna'', she was also the author of two works based on Vadakkan Pattukal viz. ''Thacholi Othenan'' and ''Payyamvelli Chandu''. The Kerala Sahitya Akademi awarded her their annual award for overall contributions in 1996. Edasseri Govindan Nair ( ml, ഇടശ്ശേരി ഗോവിന്ദൻ നായർ; 23 December 1906 – 16 October 1974) was an Indian poet and playwright of Malayalam literature. Known as one of the major poets of Malayalam, Edasseri was a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry. Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri (18 March 1926 – 15 October 2020), popularly known as Akkitham, was an Indian poet and essayist who wrote in Malayalam. He was known for a simple and lucid style of writing, exploring themes of profound love and compassion in his works. Some of his prominent works included ''Irupatham Noottandinte Ithihasam'' (English: Epic of the 20th century), ''Balidarshanam (''English: The vision of Bali)'','' and ''Nimisha Kshetram'' (English: Holy moment)''.'' Vennikkulam Gopala Kurup (1902–1980) was an Indian poet, playwright, translator, lexicographer and story writer of Malayalam. He was the author of a number of poetry anthologies, besides other works, and he translated '' Abhijnana Shakuntalam'', '' Tulsi Ramayana'', ''Tirukkuṛaḷ'', the poems of Subramania Bharati and two cantos of ''The Light of Asia'' of Edwin Arnold into Malayalam.
