Luthier
A luthier ( ; AmE also ) is a craftsperson who builds or repairs string instruments that have a neck and a sound box. The word "luthier" is originally French and comes from the French word for lute. The term was originally used for makers of lutes, but it came to be used already in French for makers of most bowed and plucked stringed instruments such as members of the violin family (including violas, cellos, and double basses) and guitars. Luthiers, however, do not make harps or pianos; these require different skills and construction methods because their strings are secured to a frame. The craft of luthiers, lutherie (rarely called "luthiery", but this often refers to stringed instruments other than those in the violin family), is commonly divided into the two main categories of makers of stringed instruments that are plucked or strummed and makers of stringed instruments that are bowed. Joan Maria Da Bressa
Joan Maria da Bressa was a Brescian lyre maker active in Venice in the first decades of the 16th century. One of the best lyres in the world made by him, with a very fine decorated and gilt head (palette) dated around 1525 by David Boyden, but more probably of the middle of the century, is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Pietro Guarneri
Pietro Guarnieri (14 April 1695 – 7 April 1762) was an Italian luthier. Sometimes referred to as ''Pietro da Venezia'', he was the son of Giuseppe Giovanni Battista Guarneri, ''filius Andreae'', and the last of the Guarneri house of violin-makers Guarnieri lived in Cremona with his father until 1717. Finding life in Casa Guarnieri in some way uncongenial, he left Cremona for good in 1717. The master arrived and settled in Venice 1717. Here he blended the Cremonese techniques of his father with Venetian, working with Comel, Gobbetti and Tononi. The Venetian makers of the same period were Matteo Goffriller, Carlo Annibale Tononi, Francesco Gobbetti, Domenico Montagnana and Sanctus Seraphin. He married Angiola Maria Ferrari on 5 April 1728, with whom he had eleven children. His first original labels from Venice date from 1721. Giuseppe Giovanni Battista Guarneri, better known as Giuseppe ''filius Andrea'' Guarneri (25 November 1666 – 1739/1740) was a violin maker from the prominent Guarneri family of luthiers who lived in Cremona, Italy. Giuseppe Guarneri Del Gesu
Bartolomeo Giuseppe "del Gesù" Guarneri (, , ; 21 August 1698 – 17 October 1744) was an Italian luthier from the Guarneri family of Cremona. He rivals Antonio Stradivari (1644–1737) with regard to the respect and reverence accorded his instruments, and for many prominent players and collectors his instruments are the most coveted of all. Instruments made by Guarneri are often referred to as ''Del Gesùs''. Guarneri is known as ''del Gesù'' (literally "of Jesus") because his labels after 1731 incorporated the ''nomen sacrum'', IHS (''iota-eta-sigma'') and a cross fleury. His instruments diverged significantly from family tradition, becoming uniquely his own style. They are considered equal in quality to those of Stradivari, and claimed by some to be superior. Andrea Guarneri
Andrea Guarneri (1626; 1698, in Cremona) was an Italian luthier, musician and founder of the Casa Guarneri. He is the most important student of Nicola Amati and grandfather of one of the best luthiers, Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarneri, del Gesù. Biography Thought to be born in 1626 to Bartolomo Guarneri in the parish of Cremona, Italy, very little is known about Andrea Guarneri's ancestors. There are records of a wood-carver by the name of Giovanni Battista Guerine, which may have been an alternative spelling of Guarneri, who lived near the residence of Nicolò Amati in Cremona in 1632, and it is possible that Andrea Guarneri was a relation of Guerine. By 1641 the young Andrea was living with Nicolò Amati and being instructed in the art of violin making, probably working alongside Francesco Ruggieri and Antonio Stradivari who were also apprentices at the same time. Giovanni Battista Guadagnini
Giovanni Battista Guadagnini (often shortened to G. B. Guadagnini; 23 June 1711 – 18 September 1786) was an Italian luthier, regarded as one of the finest craftsmen of string instruments in history. Giovanni Grancino
Giovanni Grancino (1637–1709), son of Andrea Grancino, was one of the early Milanese luthiers, and may have worked with his brother, Francesco. Giovanni was the most prominent member of the family of luthiers . Other members included Andrea Grancino, Francesco Grancino, Gianbattista Grancino (or Giovanni Battista Grancino) and Paolo Grancino. Their instruments were played by Yehudi Menuhin (violin), Siegfried Palm (cello) and Adrian Beers (double bass), among others. Grancino's workshops were all located on ''Contrada Larga'', now ''Via Larga'' in Milan. His instruments bear the characteristic ''segno della corona'' (mark of the crown). Matteo Goffriller
Matteo Goffriller (1659–1742) was a Republic of Venice, Venetian luthier, particularly noted for the quality of his cellos. He was active between 1685–1735 and was the founder of the "Venetian School (music), Venetian School" of luthiers, during a time when Venice was one of the most important centers of musical activity in the world. Biography Although it is known that Goffriller was born in Brixen, little else is known of him prior to 1685 in Venice. Goffriller arrived in Venice in 1685 to work for luthier Martin Kaiser (Caiser). In 1685 he married Martin Kaiser's daughter Maddalena Maria Kaiser (Caiser), at the Madonna delle Grazie in Venice; she bore him twelve children (five boys and seven girls) in 26 years. Francesco Goffriller
__NOTOC__ Francesco Goffriller (also Francesco Gofriller) (1692–1750) is considered one of the master Italy, Italian violin, viola and cello maker of the Venetian school. He was thought to have been active between 1709 and 1739. Although long thought to be the brother of the Republic of Venice, Venetian luthier Matteo Goffriller, he is now known to have been his son. He worked as a luthier in Venice from approximately 1709 until 1714 when he moved to Udine. Notable musicians who used Francesco Goffriller cellos including Jacqueline du Pré, Pablo Casals and Daniel Müller-Schott. August Martin Ludwig Gemünder (22 March 1814, Ingelfingen – 7 September 1895, New York City) was an American violin maker who worked in the United States. With his brother, the great American luthier George Gemünder, and others, he pioneered the construction of quality violins in the United States. Biography His father was a violin maker and repairer and Gemünder was brought up in the business—taking over the shop on his father's death. In 1839, he moved to Regensburg and resided in several other cities in Germany as well. In 1846, he emigrated to Springfield, Massachusetts, in the United States. Later he established himself in Boston and then New York City. Gemünder specialized in copying old Italian masters, especially the instruments of Antonio Stradivarius, Joseph Guarnerius, and Paolo Maggini.
