Forfar ( sco, Farfar, gd, Baile Fharfair) is the county town of Angus, Scotland and the administrative centre for Angus Council, with a new multi-million pound office complex located on the outskirts of the town. As of 2021, the town has a population of 16,280. The town lies in Strathmore, Angus and Perth & Kinross, Strathmore and is situated just off the main A90 road between Perth, Scotland, Perth and Aberdeen, with Dundee (the nearest city) being 13 miles (21 km) away. Angus ( sco, Angus; gd, Aonghas) is one of the 32 local government council areas of Scotland, a registration county and a lieutenancy area. Forfar Sheriff Court is a judicial building in Market Street, Forfar, Angus, Scotland. The building, which remains in use as a courthouse, is a Category B listed building. History The first judicial building in the town was a medieval tolbooth in The Cross which was primarily used to the detention of prisoners and which dated back at least to the 16th century. This was replaced by the Town and County Hall which was built on the same site in 1788, and was supplemented by a dedicated courthouse erected behind the Town and County Hall in 1824. However, by the mid-19th century the old courthouse was considered inadequate and, following the implementation of the Sheriff Court Houses (Scotland) Act 1860, which laid down minimum standards for courthouses, the Commissioners of Supply decided to commission a new courthouse on a site to the immediate west of Forfar Prison in Market Street. County Buildings is a municipal building in Market Street, Forfar, Scotland. The structure, which served as the headquarters of Angus County Council, is a Category C listed building. History The original prison facilities in the town were located in a medieval tolbooth in The Cross. In 1788, the tolbooth was demolished and prisoners were transferred to cells behind the new Forfar Town and County Hall. After the prison inspectors criticised "the confined and bad state of Forfar Prison" in 1841, the prison commissioners decided to procure a new building on a site in Market Street in the north of the town. The new prison building was designed by David Smith in the Scottish baronial style, built in ashlar stone and was completed in 1843. Forfar Town and County Hall is a municipal building in The Cross, Forfar, Scotland. The structure, which serves as the meeting place of Angus Council, is a Category B listed building. History Early history The first municipal building in the town was a medieval tolbooth which was primarily used to the detention of prisoners and which dated back at least to the 16th century. In the early 1660s, 42 women were tried for witchcraft at the tolbooth and, in some cases, found guilty and executed by strangulation. In the late 1770s the burgh officials decided to demolish the dilapidated tolbooth and to erect a new building in its place. The new building was designed by James Playfair in the neoclassical style, built in ashlar stone at a cost of £1,100 and was completed in 1788.
