Chen Chi-mai
Chen Chi-mai (; born December 23, 1964) is a Taiwanese politician and the current Mayor of Kaoshiung since August 24, 2020. He has served as spokesperson of the Democratic Progressive Party and the chief executive officer of its Policy Research and Coordinating Committee. A physician from Keelung, Chen started his political career by becoming member of the Legislative Yuan in 1996 and served as legislator for almost eight years before becoming the spokesperson of the Executive Yuan. In 2005, Chen succeeded to the mayoralty of Kaohsiung after Frank Hsieh's appointment as premier. Chen became the Deputy Secretary-General of the Presidential Office in 2007 and served until the inauguration of President Ma Ying-jeou. Following his December 2018 loss in the Kaohsiung mayoral election, Chen was appointed Vice Premier of the Republic of China by President Tsai Ing-wen. Chang Chun-hung
Chang Chun-hung (; born 17 May 1938) is a Taiwanese politician. Political career Chang was a member of the Kuomintang until 1973, when he left to join the Tangwai movement and won his first political office, a seat on the Taipei City Council. He served until 1977, when he was named to the Taiwan Provincial Consultative Council. During this period, Chang, Kang Ning-hsiang and Huang Shin-chieh published ''Taiwan Political Review'', an opposition magazine. Chang also edited another Tangwai publication, ''The Intellectual''. In 1979, Chang helped establish ''Formosa Magazine'' and served as the publication's chief editor. The Kaohsiung Incident occurred later that year, and Chang was sentenced to twelve years imprisonment on charges of sedition. He was released on 30 May 1987, and became secretary general of the Democratic Progressive Party the next year. In 1991, Chang was elected to the National Assembly. 1996 Taiwan Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Taiwan on 23 March 1996. It was the first direct presidential election in Taiwan, officially the Republic of China. In the previous eight elections the president and vice president had been chosen in a ballot of the deputies of the National Assembly, in accordance with the 1947 constitution. These were the first free and direct elections in the History of Taiwan. The outcome of the 1996 election was that Lee Teng-hui was elected as President and Lien Chan as Vice President. Lee stood as the incumbent, and as the candidate of the ruling Kuomintang. He won a majority of 54% of the votes cast. His election followed missile tests by the People's Republic of China (PRC). These were an attempt to intimidate the Taiwanese electorate and discourage them from supporting Lee, however the tactic backfired. Voter turnout was 76.0%. Shih Ming-teh
Shih Ming-teh (; born 15 January 1941) commonly known as Nori Shih, is a statesman and human rights defender in Taiwan and was once a political prisoner for 25-and-a-half years. Arrested at the age of 21 in 1962 and charged with creating the "Taiwan Independence League" (a study group) with the intention of overthrowing the Kuomintang government, Shih was sentenced to life imprisonment. The sentence was commuted to 15 years in 1975, and Shih was released on 16 June 1977. He promptly joined the ''Tangwai'' (literally meaning "outside the party", because the Kuomintang was the only legally existing political party in Taiwan at that time), became a reporter for the '' Liberty Times'' and married the American researcher Linda Gail Arrigo.
