This is a list of military units raised by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, a Union border state during the American Civil War, for service in the Union Army. Southern both geographically and culturally, an estimated 125,000 Kentuckians served as Union soldiers; almost quadruple the number of Kentuckians serving as Confederate soldiers (numbered at 35,000). Orphan Brigade
The Orphan Brigade was the nickname of the First Kentucky Brigade, a group of military units recruited from Kentucky to fight for the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The brigade was the largest Confederate unit to be recruited from Kentucky during the war. Its original commander was John C. Breckinridge, former United States Vice President, and Kentucky's former Senator, who was enormously popular with Kentuckians. History The regiments that were part of the Orphan Brigade were the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th Kentucky Infantry Regiments. Units of the Orphan Brigade were involved in many military engagements in the American South during the war, including the Battle of Shiloh. Graves' Artillery Battery, also known as entuckyIssaquena Artillery Battery, was organized as a Confederate States Army artillery battery from Mississippi and Kentucky (mainly Kentucky) on November 8, 1861. During its formation, as a still understrength battery, the first commander was Captain Selden Spencer.Sifakis, 2007, p. 9. In December, at Bowling Green, Kentucky, then Confederate Army Brigadier General (CSA) John C. Breckinridge chose Captain Rice E. Graves, Jr., as captain of the new battery to be attached to the 2nd Kentucky Infantry Regiment and assigned to his division. Byrne's Artillery Battery
Byrne's Battery was a light artillery battery in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.Sifakis, 2007, p. 7. It fought exclusively in the Western Theater and suffered among the highest casualties of Confederate batteries at the Battle of Stones River. The unit was formed by Edward P. Byrne, a native Kentuckian living in Washington County, Mississippi. After South Carolina's secession, Byrne was determined to raise a battery of artillery for service in the Confederate Army. With help from donations from the citizens of Washington County and his own substantial wealth, he raised his company and obtained many horses. He also ordered six guns from a firm in Memphis, Tennessee. He began recruiting in Mississippi and later in his native Kentucky. The 1st Kentucky Artillery (also known as Cobb's Battery) was an artillery battery that was a member of the Orphan Brigade in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought in several engagements throughout the Western Theater, including the battles of Shiloh, Baton Rouge, Siege of Jackson, Sulphur Trestle, Resaca, Murfreesboro, Jonesborough, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and Johnsonville. Caudill's Army
Caudill's Army was the name of a Confederate force from South Eastern Kentucky during the American Civil War that included the 10th Kentucky Mounted Rifles (designated the 13th Kentucky Cavalry in March 1865) commanded by Colonel Benjamin E. Caudill. An element of the Army of Tennessee and which served at times under General John Hunt Morgan's command. The force was active in the battle of Leatherwood and the Battle of Marion. 1st Kentucky Cavalry
The 1st Kentucky Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War; serving mostly in the Army of Tennessee. In late 1862 it was consolidated to constitute the 1st (3rd) Kentucky Cavalry, usually known as 3rd (Butler's) Kentucky Cavalry. The 3rd continued to serve for the duration of the war. Service The 1st Kentucky Cavalry was organized at Bowling Green, Kentucky and was mustered into the Confederate States Army on October 28, 1861. Commanded by Colonel Benjamin Hardin Helm the regiment briefly served in the Orphan Brigade before being brigaded with the 8th Texas Cavalry under the overall command of Joseph Wheeler.
