This is a list of films produced in Israel in the 1970s. Overview During the 1970s, a lot of films from the Bourekas genre were produced in Israel, the most famous of which is ''Giv'at Halfon Eina Ona''. These films were big successes at the box office but had a harsh critical reception. They were usually demotic comedy films (such as ''Charlie Ve'hetzi'' and ''Hagiga B'Snuker'') or sentimental melodramas (such as ''Nurit''). The main subject in most of the Bourekas films was the conflict between various classes and denominations, particularly due to romantic intentions. Prominent filmmakers in this genre during this period include Boaz Davidson, Ze'ev Revach, Yehuda Barkan and George Obadiah. Avraham Heffner
Avraham Heffner (Hebrew: אברהם הפנר; 7 May 1935 – 19 September 2014) was an Israeli film and television director, screenwriter, author and Professor Emeritus at the Tel-Aviv University. He was a recipient of the Ophir Award for lifetime achievements. Biography Heffner served in the IDF with the Nahal Army Band. After his IDF service, he studied French literature at the Sorbonne, Paris. His love for the cinema began, according to him, at the age of 17. He began his career as an actor (in Uri Zohar's '' Hor BaLevana''). His first movie as director was ''Slow Down'' (1967), an adaptation of a short story by Simone de Beauvoir, which won him the Silver Lion Award at the 1969 Venice Film Festival. Moshé Mizrahi
Moshé Mizrahi ( he, משה מזרחי; 5 September 1931 – 3 August 2018) was an Israeli film director. Biography He was born in Egypt, migrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1946, and studied filmmaking in France in 1950. He directed the Oscar-winning 1977 film ''Madame Rosa'' starring Simone Signoret. The film, which was about a former prostitute in Paris who survived Auschwitz, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film on behalf of France. He directed 14 films in both Israel and France, three of which were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; '' I Love You Rosa'', ''The House on Chelouche Street'' and ''Madame Rosa'', with the last of these winning the award. In September 1994, he was honored by the Haifa Film Festival for his lifetime contribution to Israeli cinema. ''The House on Chelouche Street'' () is a 1973 semi-autobiographical film by Israeli director Moshé Mizrahi, filmed in Hebrew, Egyptian Arabic and Judeo-Spanish (a.k.a. Ladino, a Jewish language mostly derived from Old Castilian). The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Plot The film tells the story of a Sephardi family of Egyptian Jewish immigrants from Alexandria that settle in 1947 Tel Aviv. ''I Love You Rosa'' ( he, אני אוהב אותך רוזה, Ani Ohev Otach Roza) is a 1972 Israeli film directed by Moshé Mizrahi. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was also entered into the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. Plot Based on the life of director Mizrachi's mother in late 19th century Jerusalem, the flashback-framed plot involves a young, childless, Sephardic-Mizrahi widow under pressure to comply with ancient law and eventually marry her late husband's little brother, Nissim, a grief-stricken eleven-year-old at odds with his other brother and sister-in-law, in whose home he lives. Ephraim Kishon
Ephraim Kishon (: August 23, 1924 – January 29, 2005) was a Hungarian-born Israeli author, dramatist, screenwriter, and Academy Award, Oscar-nominated film director. He was one of the most widely read contemporary satire, satirists in Israel, and was also particularly popular in German-speaking countries. Biography Ephraim Kishon was born on August 23, 1924 by the name of Ferenc Hoffmann into a middle-class Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary. In his youth he knew neither Hebrew nor Yiddish. His father worked as a bank manager and his mother was a former secretary. Kishon also had a sister who was a writer. His writing talent became evident in his youth. ''The Policeman'' ( he, השוטר אזולאי, HaShoter Azoulay, lit=The Policeman Azoulay) is a 1971 Israeli feature film, written and directed by satirist Ephraim Kishon. The title character is played by Shaike Ophir (credited as Shay K. Ophir), in what is considered one of his finest performances. The film was nominated for the 1972 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and won the Golden Globe Award in the same category. Bourekas Film
Bourekas films ( he, סרטי בורקס) were a genre of Israeli-made comic melodrama films popular in Israel in the 1960s and 1970s. History ''Haaretz'' film critic Uri Klein describes Bourekas films as a "peculiarly Israeli genre of comic melodramas or tearjerkers... based on ethnic stereotypes". They were "home-grown farces and melodramas that provided escapist entertainment during a tense period in Israeli history". The term is said to have been coined by the Israeli film director Boaz Davidson, the creator of several such films, as a play-on-words on the "Spaghetti Western" genre, known as such because that particular Western subgenre was produced in Italy. Bourekas are a popular food in Israeli cuisine. Although Bourekas films were some of the most successful in the box office, they typically received terrible reviews from critics.
