Rachel Khedoori
Rachel Khedoori (born 1964 in Sydney, Australia) is a contemporary artist of Iraqi Jewish heritage based in Los Angeles and known primarily for her mixed use of sculpture, film and architecture. Biography Khedoori was born in Sydney and raised in Australia. She is the identical twin sister of the artist Toba Khedoori, and the sister of David Khedoori. She is also the widow of artist Jason Rhoades. Khedoori received her BFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 1988. She received her MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1994. She was a visiting professor at the Academy of Art, Malmö, Sweden in 1996. Khedoori began exhibiting in 1994, a joint debut show with her sister, Toba Khedoori. Her first complete solo show gained international attention at Kunsthalle Basel and Kunstverein Braunschweig in 2001. Her exhibition in Basel focused on film projected onto 2-D and 3-D objects. Zeena Zaki
Zeena Zaki (born 1/1/1974) is an Iraqi haute couture fashion designer. She launched her first fashion atelier in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates in 2003, where her fashion house operates under the label "Julea Domani", an epitome of both Edwardian and Victorian fashion eras which prove popular amongst the UAE's fashionista's. Personal life Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Iraqi parents, Zeena and her family moved after two years to travel to Romania then to Kuwait, Iraq and then the Emirates. Zaki came from an artistic background. Her father, an interior designer who designed two of his own restaurants in Dubai and Los Angeles, and her mother was involved in the fashion industry as a designer and so Zaki learnt from her and did not attend university or college to study fashion. Aatqall Taúaa
Itikal Al-Tai is an Iraqi artist, a former television presenter, film critic and novelist born in 1949, Hilla, Iraq. Life and career Itikal Al-Tai was born on 17 March 1949 in Hilla, central Iraq, where she spent her childhood and adolescence. Her name, Itikal (Arabic for detention), is linked to political events that her family experienced at the time. She was interested in literature and writing from a very early age, at the age of 15, she won first prize in a short story competition. After finishing highschool she moved to Baghdad to study at the Academy of Fine Arts at Baghdad University, where she majored in sculpting. She graduated in 1972 and worked in the same field for a few years (1972-1978) before entering the media. Vian Sora
Vian Sora (born 1976 in Baghdad, Iraq) is an Iraqi American artist. Biography Sora was born in Baghdad in 1976. She left Iraq in 2006, during the Iraq War, eventually settling in Louisville, Kentucky with her husband in 2009. Sora works primarily with oils, but utilizes mixed media and engraving techniques to create three-dimensional textures on canvas. The work is primarily expressionist and figurative, with contemporary abstract images used to convey moods and scenes from antiquity. Her works demonstrate the influences of the East and West on her painting and upon her existence. Women of all cultures, of ancient and modern times, are a central theme in her work. She represents women as silent spiritualists and shows their journey as a constant struggle for survival. Jawad Saleem
Jewad Selim (1919–1961) ( ar, جواد سليم) was an Iraqi painter and sculptor born in Ankara, Ottoman Empire in 1919. He became an influential artist through his involvement with the Iraqi Baghdad Modern Art Group, which encouraged artists to explore techniques that combined both Arab heritage and modern art forms. Lorna Selim
Lorna Selim (1928-2021) was an English artist and art teacher, who married prominent Iraqi sculptor Jewad Selim, relocating to Baghdad with him in 1950. She was a practising artist for much of her life up until her death. Selim contributed to the arts community in Iraq through her exhibitions, teaching and active participation in arts groups for twenty years. After her husband's premature death in 1961, she was part of the team responsible for completing his iconic monumental work, entitled Freedom Monument (Baghdad), Nasb al-Hurriyah. Tamara Salman (born in Baghdad, Iraq) half- Iraqi, half- British is a British designer and business woman. Her accessories company launched in 2013. She was appointed Creative director for Liberty of London in 2004 where she remained for six years, her role was to update the brand's image and revive its signature prints and produce an own brand accessories and home collection. She has worked in the fashion industry since graduating from art school, working for some of Europe's most prestigious fashion houses, including Romeo Gigli and Prada. In 2012 she started researching and developing her own accessories business which was officially launched in August 2013 under the brand name Tamara Salman Limited. Naziha Salim
Naziha Salim ( ar, نزيهة سليم, 1927–15 February 2008) was an Iraqi artist, educator and author, described by the country's president, Jalal Talabani, as "the first Iraqi woman who anchored the pillars of Iraqi contemporary art". Life Not a great deal of scholarly attention has been given to the cultural and artistic lives of female artists. In the case of Naziha Salim, her story has been eclipsed by that of her famous older brother, Jawad Salim. Naziha Salim was born in 1927 in Istanbul to Iraqi parents, who were originally from Mosul. At the time of her birth, her father was an officer in the Ottoman army, stationed in Turkey. The family returned to Baghdad in the 1920s, when Naziha was a small child. Salima Salih
Salima Salih (Arabic: :ar:سالمة صالح, سالمة صالح; born 1942) is an Iraqi short story writer, translator, and artist, from the city of Mosul. She is well known for her articles that advocate human rights, especially Women's rights, women's rights. She has published many of Literature, literary works, including a novel, ''The Year of Cancer'', and a collection of short stories, ''The Transformations''. She wrote for ''Alef Ba’'' and ''Al-Shabab'' magazines, and was nominated as one of the members of Al-Multaqa prize committee for short Arabic stories. Education As a child, Salih was encouraged to read, explore, and express herself freely. Her mother taught her many languages, the names of flowers and herbs, and how to make a garden. Nuha Al-Radi
Nuha al-Radi (January 27, 1941 in Baghdad – August 30, 2004 in Beirut) was an Iraqi diarist, ceramicist and painter and noted author of the ''Baghdad Diaries'' which vividly recounts the horror of living through the first Gulf War. Life and career She was born into a distinguished Iraqi family which included Mahmud Shevket Pasha, Prime Minister of the Ottoman Empire. In 1919, her father Mohammed Selim al-Radi was one of the first Iraqis to be educated in the United States when he studied agriculture in Texas. He married Suad Abbas, became an Iraqi diplomat and was appointed ambassador to Iran in 1947 and then to India from 1949 to 1958, where Nuha al-Radi grew up.
