The Attorney General of Iowa is the chief legal officer of the State of Iowa, United States. The office was created February 9, 1853. The Office of the Attorney General is housed in the Lucas State Office Building in Des Moines; the attorney general also has a room in the Iowa State Capitol to prepare legislation. As stated in Iowa law, the powers and duties of the office include: Representing the departments and agencies of state government; taking action for citizens in consumer protection and other areas; enforcing the state's environmental protection laws; playing a central role in the criminal justice system; and providing assistance and advocacy for the victims of crime. The attorney general also issues legal opinions on questions of law submitted by elected or appointed state officials and defends all tort claim actions against the state. Tom Miller (politician)
Thomas John Miller (born August 11, 1944) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 33rd and current Attorney General of Iowa. After the defeat of West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw in 2012 when running for reelection, Miller became the longest serving State Attorney General in the United States, having been in office since 1995. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served in the same position from 1979 to 1991 as the state's 31st Attorney General. Miller's combined tenure of over 38 years in office makes him the longest serving State Attorney General in United States history, having surpassed Frank J. Kelley's 37-year term of office as Michigan Attorney General; Kelley still holds the record for longest ''continuous'' tenure as an attorney general, having served from 1961 to 1999. Dayton Wendell Countryman (March 31, 1918 – September 13, 2011) was an American attorney, farmer, and politician who served as the 26th Attorney General of Iowa from 1955 to 1957. Early life and education Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Countryman attended Pierson High School. He then received his bachelor's degree in forestry from Iowa State University in 1940. Benjamin J. Gibson (November 13, 1882 – July 8, 1949) was an American politician and lawyer. Born in Adams County, Iowa, Gibson went to the public schools in Adams County. He graduated from University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1906 and was admitted to the Iowa bar. Gibson practiced law in Corning, Iowa. He served in the Iowa State Senate in 1917 and was a Republican. George Cosson
George Cosson (21 January 1876 – 15 June 1963) was an American politician. Born in Laclede County, Missouri, on 21 January 1876, Cosson attended school in Manning, Iowa, and subsequently enrolled at Normal School at Valparaiso and the University of Iowa. He began working for Milwaukee Road as a station agent and operator between the ages of sixteen and twenty. Upon graduating from the University of Iowa College of Law in June 1898, Cosson moved to Audubon and began practicing law. Starting in 1904, Cosson served a single term as Audubon County attorney. In June 1907, he was appointed special counsel of Iowa, reporting to the state's attorney general, Howard Webster Byers. Cosson won the 1908 Iowa Senate election as a Republican candidate, and represented District 17 until 1911. He succeeded Byers as Attorney General of Iowa later that year, and served through 1917. Howard Webster Byers (December 25, 1856 – March 24, 1928) was an American lawyer and politician. Born in Woodstock, Richland County, Wisconsin, Byers moved with his parents to Hancock County, Iowa. Byers was educated in the public schools in Wisconsin and Iowa. Byers read law and was admitted to the Iowa bar in 1888. He practiced law in Harlan, Iowa.
