Indo-Guyanese
Indo-Guyanese or Indian-Guyanese, are people of Indian origin who are Guyanese nationals tracing their ancestry to India and the wider subcontinent. They are the descendants of indentured servants and settlers who migrated from India beginning in 1838 during the time of the British Raj. Most of the Indian settlers who arrived to then British Guiana were from North India, specifically Bihar and the Northern Awadh region of the Hindi Belt. However a significant minority came from South India through the port of Madras. Among the immigrants, there were also labourers from other parts of South Asia. The vast majority of Indians came as contract labourers during the 19th century, spurred on by political upheaval, the ramifications of the Mutiny of 1857 and famine. Others arrived as merchants, landowners and farmers pushed out by many of the same factors. Bharrat Jagdeo
Bharrat Jagdeo (born 23 January 1964) is a Guyanese politician who has been serving as Vice President of Guyana since 2020, in the administration of President Irfaan Ali. He had previously also held the office from 1997 until 1999, during the presidency of Janet Jagan. Jagdeo subsequently served as the President of Guyana from 11 August 1999 to 3 December 2011. He also holds a number of global leadership positions in the areas of sustainable development, green growth and climate change. Jagdeo, a member of the People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), served as Minister of Finance from 1995 to 1999, becoming president in 1999 after Janet Jagan resigned for health reasons. Shiw Sahai Naraine
Shiw Sahai 'Steve' Naraine (4 March 1924 – 31 July 2013) was a Guyanese engineer and politician from People's National Congress. Naraine attended Queen Mary's College, London University. Upon graduating in 1951, he returned to British Guiana and was appointed district engineer, Essequibo, then executive engineer in 1956. In 1957, he became deputy director of public works and in 1960, Director of Drainage and Irrigation in the Drainage and Irrigation Department. In 1961, he earned a diploma from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in the area of sea defence. A government restructure changed the title of the role, making Naraine the Chief and Works Hydraulics Officer. In 1965, he studied water resources development at the University of Colorado. Sase Narain
Sase Narain (27 January 1925 – 25 August 2020) was a Guyanese politician and lawyer. He served as List of Speakers of the National Assembly of Guyana, Speaker of the National Assembly of Guyana from 1971 to 1992, becoming the longest serving Speaker in Guyana. Early life Sase Narain was born in Pouderoyen, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, British Guiana, and attended the Modern Educational Institute in Georgetown, Guyana, Georgetown. After finishing high school, he went to the United Kingdom to study law. In 1957, he graduated from the City Law School in London. When he returned to Guyana, Narain became the President of the Sanātanī, Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha. Moses Veerasammy Nagamootoo (Tamil language, Tamil: மோசஸ் வீராசாமி நாகமுத்து; born 30 November 1947) is a Guyanese people, Guyanese politician, writer and novelist who served as the List of Prime Ministers of Guyana, Prime Minister of Guyana under former President of Guyana, President David A. Granger from May 2015 to August 2020. Life and career Nagamootoo was born in the village of Whim, Berbice, British Guiana, in the present-day region of East Berbice-Corentyne, in present-day Guyana. He is of Tamils, Tamil Indo-Guyanese, Indian descent. Nagamootoo worked as a teacher and journalist, and later became a lawyer. Manzoor Nadir (14 November 1955) is a Guyanese politician and Speaker of the National Assembly. Nadir was the Guyanese Minister of Labour and party leader of The United Force between 2001 and 2011. Biography Mazoon Nadir was born in Albouystown, Georgetown on 14 November 1955. He holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of Manchester, and the Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta. Nadir is an economist by profession. Gina Miller
Gina Nadira Miller (' Singh; born 19 April 1965) is a Guyanese-British business owner and activist who initiated the 2016 ''R (Miller) v Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union'' court case against the British government over its authority to implement Brexit without approval from Parliament. In September 2019 she successfully challenged the government's prorogation of Parliament, formally supported in the legal case by the former prime minister Sir John Major and the shadow attorney general, Shami Chakrabarti. She founded the True and Fair Campaign in 2012, calling for an end to financial misconduct in the investment and pension industries. Lionel Luckhoo
Sir Lionel Alfred Luckhoo (2 March 1914 – 12 December 1997) was a Guyanese politician, diplomat, and well-known lawyer, famed for his 245 consecutive successful defences in murder cases. He was the brother of the last Governor-General of Guyana, Sir Edward Luckhoo. Life and legal career Luckhoo's grandfather, Moses Luckhoo, was one of many Indians brought to Guyana as indentured labourers in the sugar cane industry in the mid-19th century. In 1899 Sir Lionel's father, Edward Alfred Luckhoo, became the first Indian solicitor of Guyana. Luckhoo was born in New Amsterdam, British Guiana, and was one of three sons and two daughters born into a prominent family of lawyers. Sir Edward Victor Luckhoo OR (24 May 1912 – 3 March 1998) was a Guyanese politician that was the last Governor-General of Guyana, and briefly the acting head of state of the Co‑operative Republic of Guyana on its formation in 1970. Family and education He was born in New Amsterdam, Berbice, the son of British Raj immigrants Evelyn Maude Mungal-Singh and Edward Luckhoo Alfred, a solicitor of Indian extraction, and educated at Queen's College, Guyana and St Catherine's College, Oxford, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree.
