Shambo
Shambo ( c. 2001 – 26 July 2007) was a black Friesian bull living in the interfaith Skanda Vale Temple near Llanpumsaint in Wales who had been adopted by the local Hindu community as a sacred animal. He came to public attention in April 2007, when a routine skin test for bovine tuberculosis (''Mycobacterium bovis'') tested positive, indicating he may have been in contact with the bacterium that causes the disease. As a result, the Welsh Government required that the bull be slaughtered. Skanda Vale disputed this and campaigned for a reprieve, expressing their belief that the sanctity of all life is the cornerstone of Hinduism. They were backed in this stance by the Hindu religious community at large. Farmers supported the Welsh Government's policy that cattle which tested positive to the skin test be destroyed in the interests of other local cattle. On 15 July 2007, Deputy High Court judge Gary Hickinbottom ruled that slaughtering Shambo would be unlawful, since the two sl ...

Ratón
Ratón ("Mouse" in English) (April 2001 – 24 March 2013) was a Spanish fighting bull that was nicknamed ''el toro asesino'' (the killer bull), ''el sangriento toro Raton'' (the bloody bull 'Raton') and ''el terrible Ratón'' (the terrible Mouse) for killing three people in bullfighting rings in Spain during 2006–2011 and injuring thirty more. The bull became legendary in Spain due to the large number of gorings for which he was responsible. Bullfighting fans regarded him as a star and traveled from across the country to see the ''morlaco'' (big bull) at his home at Sueca near Valencia. Matador Jesús Esteve said of Ratón: "He is a killer. He is lazy, he doesn't want to participate. He does his own thing, waiting for somebody to make a mistake. And then when he gets you, he wallops you, and he doesn't let up." Due to Ratón's fame, bullfighting clubs paid exceptionally high fees of up to €15,000 to feature him in their events. In 2010, for instance, the municipality of Ric ...

Islero
Islero was a Miura bull famed for killing the celebrated bullfighter Manolete on August 28, 1947. Bulls from the Miura ranch, located near Seville, Spain, are known for being large and ferocious. Islero had poor eyesight and tended to chop with his right horn. On the fateful day, he was the fifth bull of the afternoon, and the second for Manolete, at a bullfight in the town of Linares in the province of Jaén, Andalucía, Spain. The bullfighter's manager begged Manolete to finish him off quickly; as the ''matador'' reached over the bull's horns, thrusting his ''estoque'' (sword) deep up to its hilt, Islero thrust his right horn into Manolete's groin, severing his femoral artery. The bullfighter was rushed to hospital, but died on the operating table later that evening. Italian automaker Lamborghini named one of its grand tourers " Islero" as part of the company's tradition of naming its cars after Miura bulls and with other bullfighting-related terms. The Spanish project to ...

Durham Ox
The Durham Ox (March 1796 – 15 April 1807) was a steer who became famous in the early 19th century for his shape, size and weight. He was an early example of what became the Shorthorn breed of cattle and helped establish the standards by which the breed was to be defined. History The animal was born in March 1796 and was bred by Charles Colling of Ketton Hall, Brafferton in County Durham, north east England. Colling, together with his brother Robert, who farmed at nearby Barmpton, was a pioneer of the cattle-breeding movement of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. After a visit in 1784 to Robert Bakewell, a successful breeder of Longhorn cattle, Colling began using Bakewell's techniques to develop and improve the Shorthorn breed. The animal eventually known as the Durham Ox was the grandson of Colling's original bull Hubbach or Hubback, and became known as the Ketton Ox when he was exhibited in Darlington in 1799. He was painted as such at the age of five years in ...
