Eleutherian College
Eleutherian College, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1997, was founded as Eleutherian Institute in 1848 by a group of local anti-slavery Baptists at Lancaster in Jefferson County. The institute's name comes from the Greek word ''eleutheros'', meaning "freedom and equality." The school admitted students without regard to ethnicity or gender, including freed and fugitive slaves. Its first classes began offering secondary school instruction on November 27, 1848. The school was renamed Eleutherian College in 1854, when it began offering college-level coursework. It is the second college in the United States west of the Allegheny Mountains and the first in Indiana to provide interracial education. The restored three-story stone chapel and classroom building was constructed between 1853 and 1856 and presently serves as a local history museum. Lancaster, Jefferson County, Indiana
Lancaster is an unincorporated community in Lancaster Township, Jefferson County, Indiana. History Lancaster was platted on Oct. 5, 1815 by David Hillis and William McFarland. The plat established 128 lots, reserving some for the construction of a courthouse, market house and place of public worship. They probably wanted to get the county seat moved from Madison. McFarland was a county judge and Hillis, a popular local politician, later became lieutenant government of Indiana. The Lancaster Post Office operated from March 16, 1830 through August 30, 1839. Service went to Dupont, then to Republican and Franklin Mills, before returning to Lancaster on August 19, 1841. It closed on March 15, 1907. Before the Civil War, the area was a center of anti-slavery activity. The Neal's Creek Anti-Slavery Baptist Church, founded in 1846, moved to Lancaster in 1847. State Road 250 (SR 250) in the U.S. State of Indiana is a secondary route that runs from U.S. Route 50 (US 50) in Brownstown eastward toward the Ohio River at State Road 156 (SR 156) in Patriot in southeast Indiana. Towns include Uniontown, Paris Crossing, Canaan, and East Enterprise. SR 250 is split in two north of Madison due to the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge (formerly the Jefferson Proving Ground). Route description Most of the length of SR 250 is a rural two-lane highway. Western section SR 250 heads southeast from the western terminus in Brownstown towards State Road 39. Lyman And Asenath Hoyt House
Lyman and Asenath Hoyt House is a historic home located at Lancaster Township, Jefferson County, Indiana, and owned by the non-profit group, Historic Eleutherian College Incorporated. Built about 1850, the two-story, rectangular, limestone dwelling has Greek Revival-style design elements. Its front facade has gable roof and a deep-set wooden entry door. ''Note:'' This includes and accompanying photographs. The house is believed to have been an active stop on the Underground Railroad in Indiana from Madison, Indiana on the Ohio River to Indianapolis, Indiana. Lyman Hoyt, along with other local abolitionists and Reverend Thomas Craven, was also a founder of Eleutherian Institute in 1848.
