This is a list of notable Indian horror films. Hindi films Kannada film Malayalam films History 1940s–1960s The first real horror movie made by the Indian film industry was Kamal Amrohi's '' Mahal'' in 1949. The film (which starred Ashok Kumar and Madhubala in leading roles) proved a major box office hit, leading Madhubala and Lata Mangeshkar into stardom. Hemant Kumar's '' Bees Saal Baad'' (released in 1962) was another film which proved to be a box-office success. This film ignited the huge increase in popularity of horror-genre movies in the following years. ''Gumnaam'' (1965) and ''Bhoot Bungla'' (also 1965) were some of the other major horror movies which were seen in theaters at this time. Bhoot Bungla
''Bhoot Bungla'' () is a 1965 Indian Hindi-language horror comedy film directed by Mehmood, who stars in the film alongside Tanuja and Nazir Hussain. Music for this film was composed by R.D. Burman. Plot Fifty years ago, Kundanlal was murdered and his wife and child vanished on a dark night, at the haunted bungalow surrounded by a jungle in the outskirts of Bombay. In the present, three brothers are living in the bungalow, who are Kundanlal's nephews. They are Shyamlal, Ramlal and Ramu. On the eve of Ramlal's daughter Rekha's Return from London, Ramlal is killed in a car accident which is suspected of murder. ''Dahshat'' is a 1981 Bollywood horror film directed by Shyam Ramsay and Tulsi Ramsay. Plot Dr. Sameer has just returned to his native place Chandan Nagar after finishing his medical studies in Russia. He is assisted by Dr. Bakshi, a vet by profession, but looks to be a close relative of a roadside juggler. Sameer is welcomed by his family and is greeted by his childhood crush Kiran, with whom he soon gets romantically entangled. Sameer discovers a horrible secret and terror that anonymously lies in the vicinity. It seems a grave robber is digging up graves for some reason and is stealing the cadavers. ''Red Rose'' is a 1980 Indian Hindi-language psychological thriller film, starring Rajesh Khanna and Poonam Dhillon. It is a remake of the Tamil film ''Sigappu Rojakkal'', made by the same director Bharathiraja and the same cinematographer P. S. Nivas. Plot Anand is a successful businessman with a dark side. He preys on nubile girls, seduces and kills them. These proceedings are video-recorded and watched by his adoptive father and mentor, another deranged woman-hater who, as with Anand, had a disillusioning experience with the female sex in his past. Saboot () is a 1980 Indian Hindi-language horror/thriller film directed by Shyam Ramsay and Tulsi Ramsay. It stars Navin Nischol, Kajal Kiran, Vidya Sinha, Vinod Mehra, Trilok Kapoor, Om Shivpuri and Prem Chopra. Plot Seth Dharamdas (Trilok Kapoor) has two daughters: the older one is Asha (Vidya Sinha) and the younger one is Kajal ( Kajal Kiran). Dharamdas had struck a business deal with Dhanraj. Plot Thakur Pratap Singh has lost his beloved ones due to a curse put on him and his family by a widow, whose son Dharma was unintentionally killed by Pratap Singh long back.
