Home Ownership Scheme
The Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) is a subsidised-sale public housing programme managed by the Hong Kong Housing Authority. It was instituted in the late 1970s as part of the government policy for public housing with two aims – to encourage better-off tenants of rental flats to vacate those flats for re-allocation to families in greater housing need; and also to provide an opportunity for home ownership to families unable to afford to buy in the private sector. Under the scheme, the government sells flats to eligible public housing tenants and to lower-income residents at prices below the market level, with discounts usually between 30 and 40 per cent. It restricts resale of the units in the second-hand market to other families who qualify or, on the open market, after payment of a premium equal to the updated value of the discount given on the original purchase. Wang Tau Hom Estate
Wang Tau Hom Estate () is a public housing estate in Wang Tau Hom, Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon, Hong Kong, along Lung Cheung Road and next to Lok Fu. The estate was originally built in 1962 with a total of 25 blocks, but it was redeveloped between 1982 and 1983. It now consists of 18 blocks of three types, namely, Double H, Harmony 3 and Linear L with Linear 1 and Linear 3, providing a total of 5,900 domestic flats. There were originally six more blocks, but these were allocated to Lok Fu Estate because they were near MTR Lok Fu station after its 1991 construction. Choi Wan Estate () is a public housing estate in Ngau Chi Wan, Wong Tai Sin District, Kowloon, Hong Kong, located between Ngau Chi Wan Village and Jordan Valley and the foot of Fei Ngo Shan. Kai Long Court () is a Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) court developed by the Hong Kong Housing Authority and located at 18 Muk On Street, Kai Tak Development of Kowloon City District, Kowloon, Hong Kong. It commenced in March 2019. The court has a site area of around 5,710 square metres, and comprises 3 residential blocks providing 683 residential units. It is the largest public housing estate in Kowloon City District and has a total of 12 residential blocks which were completed between 1974 and 1975. Lai Tsui Court (), former name Lai Chi Estate (), is the second Green Form Subsidised Home Ownership Scheme (GFSHOS) court and a public rental housing (PRH) at the junction of Lai Chi Kok Road and Tonkin Street in Cheung Sha Wan of Sham Shui Po District. It was formerly the site of the demolished Cheung Sha Wan Estate and just next to MTR Cheung Sha Wan station and Fortune Estate. GFSHOS part comprises 6 blocks (i.e. Blocks A to F) with totally 2,545 flats at the saleable areas ranging from about 17.1 square metres to about 42 square metres. By applying a discount of 58 per cent to assessed market values, the average selling price was HK$6,243 per square foot of saleable area. Lai On Estate () is a public housing estate in Sham Shui Po, New Kowloon, Hong Kong located near Lai Kok Estate, Dragon Centre, and Sham Shui Po station. It consists of 5 residential blocks completed in 1993. Yee Ching Court () is a Home Ownership Scheme court in Sham Shui Po, near Lai Kok Estate, Lai On Estate and Dragon Centre. It has 3 blocks built in 1993. Background The site where the estate is located was formerly the Sham Shui Po Barracks () of the British Army between the 1910s to 1977. During World War II, the barrack was attacked by the Japanese Army and was used as a concentration camp during the Japanese occupation from 1941–45. Public housing in Hong Kong is a set of mass housing programmes through which the Government of Hong Kong provides affordable housing for lower-income residents. It is a major component of housing in Hong Kong, with nearly half of the population now residing in some form of public housing. The public housing policy dates to 1954, after a fire in Shek Kip Mei destroyed thousands of shanty homes and prompted the government to begin constructing homes for the poor.
