Albany, South Africa
Albany, South Africa (also known as Cape Borders, Cape Frontier, Settler Country, and Western Region) was a district in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Grahamstown was traditionally the administrative capital, cultural centre and largest town of the Albany district. The area was previously known as the 'Zuurveld' by migrating Boer farmers in the late 18th century, and it lay near the boundary between the Cape Colony and the traditional Xhosa lands to the east. The 1820 Settlers were instrumental in settling and farming the district and giving it some of its distinctive local culture. Good Shepherd School, Grahamstown
The Good Shepherd School in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa is a ''public school on private property'' providing education for boys and girls from grade 1 to grade 7. History The school was established by Mother Cecile of Grahamstown in October 1884 (though not in its present premises). Mother Cecile was the founder of the Community of the Resurrection of our Lord (also known as the CR Sisters). In 1918, the CR Sisters purchased the current building in Huntley Street, and the Good Shepherd School moved into its current home. The Huntley Street Building was built in 1844, and was—from 1849—the St. George's Grammar School. St. George's Grammar School was founded by Robert Gray (bishop of Cape Town), Robert Gray, Bishop of Cape Town. F. Sidbury, Eastern Cape
Sidbury is a village in the Albany district of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. History The village was founded by Lieutenant Richard Daniell, R.N. He was leader of the Daniell party of the British 1820 Settlers to the Eastern Cape which came to South Africa on the ship the ''Duke of Marlborough ''. He named the village after his home town of Sidbury, Devonshire. He provided land and funds for the building of a church in the village, the church (named St Peter's after the church in Sidbury, Devonshire) was built in 1841 and was one of the first ten Anglican churches in South Africa. The church predates the establishment of the Diocese of Cape Town. The church is a heritage site recognised by the South African Heritage Resource Agency. In the 1890s, the community of Sidbury started a cricket club which continues to the present despite its small population. Grocott's Mail
''Grocott’s Mail'' is the oldest surviving independent newspaper in South Africa. Founded in 1870 (but incorporating the ''Grahamstown Journal'' which was founded in 1831), this weekly newspaper has survived many years and is today the only newspaper that is published in Grahamstown. Founding Thomas Henry Grocott was the founder of ''Grocott’s Free Paper'', established on 7 May 1870 from premises in High Street, which is a listed heritage site. The gable of the building, with its Victorian and Flemish features, bears the date 1869-1906, while the present façade was added in 1906 after a devastating fire. Twentieth century In 1920 Grocott and Sherry bought out the ''Grahamstown Journal'' and the two publishers decided to issue a single daily edition due to the post war paper shortage. Old Provost
The Old Provost is a military prison finished in early 1838 as part of efforts to fortify the small city of Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. These efforts were part of the Governor of the Cape Colony's, Sir Benjamin d'Urban, 1835 defensive plan which includes the building of Fort Selwyn and the fortification of the Drostdy. It is situated on Lucas Avenue between the Old Military Hospital, which is now part of the Rhodes University Botany Department, and the Grahamstown Botanical Gardens. Built to a design adapted from Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon prison. This design is unique in the British Cape Colony. Designed to allow for constant surveillance of the prisoners. The prison is shaped as a quarter circle with eight cells, roughly 2m by 3m each, running along the curved arc of wall with the exercise area's for each cell radiating out from the double story watch tower, which has portals looking into each exercise area.
