The following is a list of Guggenheim Fellowships awarded in 1962. Guggenheim Fellowships are American grants that have been awarded annually since 1925 by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to those "who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts." Guggenheim Fellowships
Guggenheim Fellowships are grants that have been awarded annually since by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to those "who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts." Each year, the foundation issues awards in each of two separate competitions: * One open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States and Canada. * The other to citizens and permanent residents of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Latin America and Caribbean competition is currently suspended "while we examine the workings and efficacy of the program. The U.S. and Canadian competition is unaffected by this suspension." The performing arts are excluded, although composers, film directors, and choreographers are eligible. The fellowships are not open to students, only to "advanced professionals in mid-career" such as published authors. Andrew John Berger
Andrew John Berger (August 30, 1915 – July 4, 1995) was an American ornithologist from the American Museum of Natural History. Berger was born in Warren, Ohio on August 30, 1915. In 1939 he graduated from Oberlin College. After doing fieldwork in game management from 1940 to 1941, he married Edith Grace Denniston in 1942. The couple had two children, John Denniston Berger and Diana Marie Berger. From 1941 to 1946, he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps; he continued his military service in the US Air Force Reserve and reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1950 he obtained his PhD in zoology from the University of Michigan. From 1951 through 1963 he taught gross anatomy at the University of Michigan Medical School. He also conducted research on natural history and breeding behavior of the Kirtland's warbler (and other avian species) from the early 1950s through the end of 1963. Eugenio Calabi
Eugenio Calabi (born 11 May 1923) is an Italian-born American mathematician and the Thomas A. Scott Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus, at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in differential geometry, partial differential equations and their applications. Academic career Calabi was a Putnam Fellow as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1946. He received his PhD in mathematics from Princeton University in 1950 after completing a doctoral dissertation, titled "Isometric complex analytic imbedding of Kahler manifolds", under the supervision of Salomon Bochner. He later obtained a professorship at the University of Minnesota. In 1964, Calabi joined the mathematics faculty at the University of Pennsylvania. David Braybrooke
David Braybrooke (October 18, 1924–August 7, 2013) was a political philosophy, political philosopher and professor emeritus at both Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and the University of Texas at Austin. Early life and education Braybrooke was born on October 18, 1924, in Hackettstown, New Jersey, Hackettstown, New Jersey. He graduated from Boonton High School in 1942 and volunteered for the army. Robert Branner
Robert Branner (January 13, 1927 – November 26, 1973) was an American art historian, archaeologist, and educator. A scholar of medieval art, specializing in Gothic architecture and illuminated manuscripts, Branner was Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University. Career Born in New York City, Branner was the son of the noted cartoonist Martin Branner and Edith Fabbrini. Branner was drafted into the United States Army in 1945, serving in the later stages of the European theatre of World War II.
