Västernorrland was created from the briefly existing Härnösand County, Härnösand and Hudiksvall County, Hudiksvall Counties in 1654, which in turn had been separated from Norrland County in 1645. Västernorrland County
Västernorrland County () is a county ('' län'') in the north of Sweden. It is bordered by the counties of Gävleborg, Jämtland, Västerbotten and the Gulf of Bothnia. The name ''Västernorrland'' means "Western Norrland", as it was in the western part of the original Norrland (northern Sweden and northern Finland). Otto Vellingk
Count Otto Ottoson Vellingk (1649–1708) was a Swedish general during the Great Northern War. Biography He was born in Jama in Swedish Ingria to Otto Gotthardsson Vellingk and Christina Nilsdotter Mannersköld. In 1664, Vellingk became a lieutenant with the Swedish regiment at Bremen. He subsequently entered French service in 1666 and was promoted in 1670 to Colonel in the French army. He was promoted to general in the Swedish Army during 1698. He participated in key battles of Great Northern War including: the Battle of Narva in 1700, and the Crossing of Daugava near Riga in 1701. He participated in the Battle of Klissow on 9 July 1702. He was in the Battle of Punitz on 28 October 1704. He was made a royal advisor in 1705, and ennobled as a count in 1706. Carl Gustaf Bielke (1683–1754) was a Swedish count and book collector. He was the son of Nils Bielke, and he is known for his collection of more than 8,000 books, which later became part of the Skokloster Castle library after the collection passed to his nephew, Erik Brahe. Hugo Hamilton, Baron Hamilton (also Hugh; died 1724) was a Swedish military commander of Scots-Irish background. His title was Swedish. Life He was a younger son of Captain John Hamilton of Ballygally in County Tyrone, Ireland, by his wife Jean, daughter of James Somerville. His father was a younger son of Malcolm Hamilton, and Hugh Hamilton, 1st Viscount of Glenawly was his uncle. After seeing military service at home, Hamilton was summoned to Sweden in 1680 by his elder brother Malcolm, an officer in the Swedish army. There his earliest commission was as lieutenant of the Älvsborg Regiment, in which he rose to be captain. In 1693 he and his brother were ennobled in Sweden as barons Hamilton de Hageby.
