Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Ahead of the All-Ireland final, the captain is the first member of the team to shake the hand of dignitaries who may be attending the game, for example the president of the GAA or the president of Ireland. Darragh Coen
Darragh Coen (born 1975) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a right corner-forward for the Galway senior team. Born in Clarinbridge, County Galway, Coen first played competitive hurling in his youth. He enjoyed championship success at under-age levels with the Clarinbridge club. Landers subsequently joined the Clarinbridge senior team and won one Connacht medal and one championship medal. Coen made his début on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Galway minor team. An All-Ireland medal winner in this grade, he later lined out with the under-21 team with whom he also enjoyed All-Ireland success. Coen joined the senior team during the 1997 National Hurling League. Liam Mellows GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Renmore, a suburb of Galway (city), Galway City, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The club is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. The club is named after IRB member Liam Mellows. On 12 November 2017, Liam Mellows reached their first Galway Senior Hurling Championship final since 1970 after defeating Cappataggle GAA, Cappataggle by 0-13 to 1-9 in Athenry. Conor O'Donovan (hurler)
Conor Matthew O'Donovan (born 7 February 1962) is an Irish retired hurler. His league and championship career with the Tipperary senior team lasted seven seasons from 1984 to 1991. Born in Effin, County Limerick, O'Donovan was raised in a strong hurling family. His uncle, Terry Moloney, was an All-Ireland runner-up with Tipperary in 1960. O'Donovan first played competitive hurling with the Effin club at juvenile and underage levels. After transferring to the Nenagh Éire Óg club, he immediately became a member of the club's senior team. The highlight of his club career came in 1995 when he won a county championship medal as captain. O'Donovan made his debut on the inter-county scene when he was selected for the Limerick minor team. He enjoyed one championship season with the minor team before subsequently joining the Tipperary under-21 team. Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the parish of Tynagh, County Galway, Ireland. The club is primarily concerned with the game of hurling History As neighbouring parishes both Tynagh and Duniry often combined in an effort to field teams. In the early years of the 20th century there were also two separate clubs in Tynagh and Duniry. In 1996 both Tynagh and Abbey/Duniry joined forces at under-age level as a result of a decline in population. Kevin Devine (born December 19, 1979) is an American songwriter and musician from Staten Island, New York City, who is known for his introspective and political themes. He is a contemporary member of the underground indie rock and indie folk musical scenes, and his influences range from older indie artists such as Neutral Milk Hotel, Elliott Smith and Pavement to more mainstream and well known acts such as Nirvana and Bob Dylan.
