USS ''Piedmont'' (AD–17) was a built during World War II for the United States Navy. Her task was to service destroyers in, or near, battle areas and to keep them fit for duty. She served in the Pacific Ocean during World War II, the Cold War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. For her work in battle areas, the ship was awarded four battle stars for her Korean War efforts and one for Vietnam War service. She was laid down by the Tampa Shipbuilding Company, Inc., in Tampa, Florida, on 1 December 1941; launched 7 December 1942; sponsored by Mrs. Elsa Kauffman; and, commissioned 5 January 1944. The ship's mascot was the ''Doc'', one of the dwarfs in Disney's ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs''. Due to the mascot being a male character, Piedmont was officially referred to as "He", rather than "She", as are other ships. ''Shahin'' ( fa, شاهین), named ''Pahlavi'' ( fa, پهلوی) from 1926 to 1935, was an Iranian naval gunboat sunk in the World War II. She was built in Germany as ''FM24'' in 1917 and served in the German navy during World War I as a minesweeper. History ''FM24'' was built by German Frerichs & Co. at Einswarden, near Nordenham. A , she was launched in 1918 and was commissioned by Imperial German Navy on 15 March 1919. ''FM24'' continued to serve in the Reichsmarine until 29 April 1922. She was sold on 7 April to an unknown buyer in Hamburg, who renamed her ''Fatiya'', for M650,000. When Uzbeks attacked Persian customs and military posts stationed near Farahabad, killing the customs chief and stealing wives and belongings of the men by sea, the Persian government sought to reinforce its forces in the Caspian Sea. Iranian Vessel Mozaffari
''Mozaffari'' ( fa, مظفری) was a steam yacht that was converted to a gunboat. Launched in 1899 as a Belgian merchant ship, it was purchased as a royal yacht for Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar and served Persian navy from 1902 to 1914; and again between 1918 and 1936. Royal Navy seized her in 1914 and used it until 1918 during World War I. History The vessel was built in Nantes, France in 1899, according to ''Jane's''. ''Susa'' ( fa, شوش) was a steamer patrol boat owned by Persia. She was bought in 1884 from Germany along with ''Persepolis'', together with whom formed the only two equipment in the navy as of 1904. Construction and commissioning ''Susa'' was built by German AG Weser at Bremen, on orders from Persian government. The shipbuilder assigned production number 76 to the vessel and launched it in 1884.
