Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. The objective of the game is to score more goals than the opposition by moving the ball beyond the goal line into a rectangular framed goal defended by the opposing side. Traditionally, the game has been played over two 45 minute halves, for a total match time of 90 minutes. With an estimated 250 million players active in over 200 countries, it is considered the world's most popular sport. 07 Vestur
07 Vestur is a Faroese football club, which was founded in 2007. It is located in Sandavágur and Sørvágur on Vágar island. History The club was founded 18 December 1993 as FS Vágar. It was a merger of Vágar island teams MB Miðvágur and SÍF Sandavágur in order to increase the footballing standard of this part of the Faroe Islands. SÍ Sørvágur, also located on Vágar, joined the club in 1998. Soon, the newly founded club promoted to the national top league which, at that point in 1995, was called 1. deild. Unfortunately, the team was not able to permanently secure a top-tier spot over the years. In 2003, FS Vágar was relegated for good. Soon after that, the alliance between the three founding clubs began to crumble, and FS Vágar was eventually disbanded in the fall of 2004. SÍF Sandavágur
SÍF Sandavágur is a Faroese Football club based in Sandavágur on the island of Vágar. History SÍF Sandavágur was founded in 1906; although the club is one of oldest in the Faroe Islands, SÍF only played in the top division (now Betri Deildin) three times: 1989, 1990 and 1992, since the league's creation in 1942. The best league finish in the top flight was 8th Place in 1989. In 1993, SÍF merged with MB Miðvágur to form FS Vágar. SÍ Sørvágur also became part of the merger in 1998. They played in the top league between 1995–97 and again in 2000. After the 2004 season the merger collapsed and the 3 clubs separated. After the split, SIF Sandavágur joined 3. deild (the fourth league) in the 2007 season, this was the last season they played at adult level and the club hasn't participated in the Football League since. Sumbiar Ítróttarfelag, commonly known as just Sumba, was a Faroese football club based in Sumba. In 2005 it merged with VB Vágur to form VB/Sumba, later renamed FC Suðuroy. History Founded in 1940, the club spent the majority of its existence in the lower tiers of Faroese football, winning the 2. deild in 1982 and the 1. deild in 1997. In 1995 the club merged with VB Vágur for the first time, forming Sumba/VB, but the merger lasted only one season. Eiðis Bóltfelag (also known as EB) is a Faroese sports club based in Eiði. Its football section merged with Streymur Hvalvik in 1993 to form EB/Streymur. History Football The club was founded on 23 February 1913, making it the oldest football club on Eysturoy The idea of a local football club was well received. Within the first few days, membership had risen to 40+ people. In the first 30 years of existence, Eiðis Bóltfelag was only active in football. In the early years, from 1913 to 1916 time was spent on building the pitch. In 1916 EB played its first game. A 9-a-side game organized together with men from Fuglafjørður. FF Giza
Fótbóltsfelagið Giza, commonly known as FF Giza, was a Faroese football club from Tórshavn. History The club was founded in 2008 by some friends, who played for another club called NÍF (Nólsoyar Ítróttarfelag, founded in 1968) at the time. Along with dreams of building a new superpower in Faroese football, these young men wanted a place to call home. The club has initially played its home matches in Argir before moving to Tórshavn. Its first official season was in 2009. In 2011, FF Giza won the 3. deild title, the first trophy in the club's history, and was promoted to 2. deild. However, before the start of the 2012 season, the club merged with FC Hoyvík to create Giza Hoyvík. FC Hoyvík
FC Hoyvík was a Faroese football club, which merged with FF Giza in 2012. The new club was called Giza Hoyvík and later changed its name to FC Hoyvík. This incarnation of FC Hoyvík was previously named ÍF Fram Tórshavn (Tórshavn Forward) and was located in the Hoyvík district, a suburb of the capital Tórshavn, Faroe Islands. History The club was founded on 12 January 1975 as IF Fram Tórshavn, and became the third football club in Tórshavn. HB Tórshavn (1904) and B36 Tórshavn (1936) are the first two. Leirvík ÍF
Leirvík ( da, Lervig) is a town on the Faroe Islands and was an important regional ferry harbour at the east coast of the second-largest island Eysturoy. Leirvík has a population of 1,048 (2022). It was the only town in the municipality of Leirvík (''Leirvíkar kommuna''), however on 1 January 2009, it merged with Gøtu kommuna to make the new municipality called Eysturkommuna. Leirvík is important for its fishing industry. The Norðoyatunnilin, a submarine tunnel to Klaksvík to the east, was opened in April 2006. A district heating system pulls heat from the sea, increases the heat in a heat pump powered by electricity, and sends the heat to the large buildings in the town.
