Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. Wally Johnson
Walter Simon Johnson (1 September 1887 – 9 October 1962) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Thomas Henry Johnson (1866-1915), and Eliza Caroline Johnson (1863-1949), née Thomas, Walter Simon Johnson was born in Collingwood on 1 September 1887. He died on 9 October 1962. Football Having initially tried to play with Collingwood, Johnson made his debut for Fitzroy in 1907 and finished the year as the club's joint best and fairest winner. He played most of his career at half back but played up forward for his first three seasons, topping Fitzroy's goal-kicking in 1908 with 27 goals. A member of their premiership side in 1913, the following season Johnson represented Victoria at the Sydney Carnival. Jack Moriarty
Jack Moriarty (30 April 1901 – 5 September 1980) was an Australian rules footballer and champion goal-kicker in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of the Fitzroy full-back, dual premiership player, and first coach, Geoffrey John Moriarty (1871-1948), and Mary Anne Moriarty (1879-1964), née Jackson, Geoffrey John Moriarty was born at Fitzroy, Victoria on 30 April 1901. He married Isabel Sophia Nairn (1901-1987) in 1924. Haydn Bunton, Sr
Haydn William Bunton (5 July 1911 – 5 September 1955) was an Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL), in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), and in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) during the 1930s and 1940s. Bunton is the only footballer to have won the Brownlow Medal and the Sandover Medal three times each. He is one of only four footballers to have won the Brownlow three times (the others being Ian Stewart, Dick Reynolds and Bob Skilton), and one of only five footballers to have won the Sandover at least three times (the others being Bill Walker, who won it four times; and Barry Cable, Graham Farmer and Merv McIntosh, who each won it three times). Colin Niven
Colin Niven (6 September 1903 – 1 December 1968) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Colin Niven (1870-1938), and Ida Bell Niven (1875-1947), née Lewis, Colin Leslie Niven was born at Bealiba, Victoria on 6 September 1903. His cousin once removed, Gordon Jones, also played for Melbourne. He married Ada Dorothy Smith in 1934. Footballer Niven, a follower, played in the Ballarat Football League prior to joining Fitzroy. He captain-coached Fitzroy in 1930 and 1931 before crossing to Melbourne, which he captained in 1934 and 1935. His brother Ray, who played beside Colin in 1931, later reunited with him at Melbourne where they again appeared together in the same side. Charlie Chapman (Australian Footballer)
Charles Thomas Chapman (11 January 1905 – 17 April 1978) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family His son, James Chapman, played for Fitzroy in the 1950s. Football Chapman, a ruckman and centre half-forward, first appeared for Fitzroy in the 1924 finals. He played in two semi finals and kicked two goals in each. This made him the first ever Fitzroy player to make his league debut in a finals series. He was a regular fixture in the Fitzroy team from 1925 and also represented Victoria at interstate football on 10 occasions, including matches in the 1930 Adelaide Carnival. Len Wigraft
Leonard Herman Wigraft (28 January 1897 – 16 January 1982) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Wigraft usually played as a follower and won a premiership with Fitzroy in 1922. He was also a three-time Best and Fairest winner with Fitzroy – in 1920, 1924 and 1925. He captained Fitzroy in his last season of football in 1927 and was briefly their caretaker coach in 1934. Len also coached Echuca in 1928 to their first premiership. He returned to Fitzroy in the 1930s and remained at Fitzroy as a delegate. Bill Adams (Australian Footballer)
William John Adams (11 December 1900 – 11 August 1973) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) before becoming coach of South Melbourne. He also went by his nickname of "Bull" during his career. Football Adams was originally from South Fremantle where he played 32 games from his debut in 1921. In his first season, he was included in the Western Australian squad for the Perth Carnival, but did not manage a game. Adams came to Melbourne in 1923 to play with Fitzroy, but was refused a clearance by South Fremantle and instead became captain-coach of Preston in the Victorian Junior Football Association ''(pictured right with John Wren Shield as premiers)''. Jim Atkinson
James Archibald "Snowy" Atkinson (4 April 1896 – 11 June 1956) was an Australian rules footballer and first class cricketer. Family The son of Michael James Atkinson, and Margaret Atkinson, née Markland, James Archibald Atkinson was born in Fitzroy North, Victoria on 4 April 1896. He married Mary Agnes McLoughlin in 1919. Football Atkinson played his football with Fitzroy in the VFL from 1917 to 1925. He was a defender, and in 1922 was a member of Fitzroy's premiership side as well as winning their Club Champion award. Atkinson was club captain in 1924 and 1925. He moved to Tasmania in 1926 and finished his footballing career with Lefroy. He represented Tasmania at the interstate football carnival in Melbourne in 1927. Gordon Rattray
Gordon Kitchener Rattray (19 October 1898 – 10 December 1964) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was the first VFL player to use the torpedo punt. Family The son of Bruce Rattray (1860–1932) and Laura Rattray, née Barratt, Gordon Kitchener Rattray was born at Shepparton on 19 October 1898. The 1922 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Fitzroy Football Club and Collingwood Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 14 October 1922.
