First National Pictures
First National Pictures was an American motion picture production and distribution company. It was founded in 1917 as First National Exhibitors' Circuit, Inc., an association of independent theatre owners in the United States, and became the country's largest theater chain. Expanding from exhibiting movies to distributing them, the company reincorporated in 1919 as Associated First National Theatres, Inc., and Associated First National Pictures, Inc. In 1924 it expanded to become a motion picture production company as First National Pictures, Inc., and became an important studio in the film industry. In September 1928, control of First National passed to Warner Bros., into which it was completely absorbed on November 4, 1929. A number of Warner Bros. films were thereafter branded First National Pictures until July 1936, when First National Pictures, Inc., was dissolved. ''Daddy-Long-Legs'' is a 1919 American silent comedy-drama film directed by Marshall Neilan, and based on Jean Webster's 1912 novel '' Daddy-Long-Legs''. The film stars Mary Pickford. Plot A police officer finds a baby in a trash can, and Mrs. Lippett, the cruel matron at an orphanage where children are made to work, names her "Jerusha Abbott" (she picks "Abbott" out of a phone book and gets "Jerusha" from a tombstone). The orphan, who comes to be called Judy, does what she can to stand up for the younger children, frequently clashing with both Mrs. Lippett and the cold hearted trustees. At one point she leads a rebellion against being served prunes with every meal and at another, steals a doll from a selfish rich girl to lend to a dying orphan. ''Passion's Playground'' is a 1920 American silent drama film produced by and starring Katherine MacDonald. Rudolph Valentino has a featured part in the film billed as Rudolph Valentine. The film is based on the novel ''The Guests of Hercules'' by Charles Norris Williamson and Alice Muriel Williamson. This film is presumed lost. ''In Old Kentucky'' is a 1919 American silent drama film produced by Louis B. Mayer and distributed through First National Attractions, later First National Pictures. The picture was directed by Marshall Neilan and starred Anita Stewart. It was based on the play ''In Old Kentucky'' by Charles T. Dazey. Neilan and Mayer worked often together at this time, but after Mayer became head of MGM in 1924, the two had a falling out which revealed each man disliking the other fiercely. Neilan was vocal about his dislike of Mayer, which damaged his Hollywood career. Later, not finding work at the major studios, Neilan ended his career directing B movies. Later, as head of MGM, Mayer had the film remade in 1927. In 1935, Will Rogers made a sound version at Fox. MGM has preserved the film. ''Back to God's Country'' is a 1919 Canadian drama film directed by David Hartford. It is one of the earliest Canadian feature films. The film starred and was co-written by Canadian actress Nell Shipman. With an estimated budget of over $67,000, it was the most successful silent film in Canadian history. The film is noteworthy as it starred Shipman and was produced by her husband, Ernest. Shipman was one of the first women to do a nude scene on screen in the movie. In 1918, they created a production company, Shipman-Curwood Producing Company, to produce ''Back to God's Country''. The film was the only film the company would produce, and was based on a short story, "Whapi, the Walrus", by James Oliver Curwood. Curwood's story was adapted to the screen by Nell herself.
