The following is a list of characters that first appeared in the United Kingdom, British soap opera ''Emmerdale'' in 1978 and 1979, by order of first appearance. Seth Armstrong Meg Armstrong Meg Armstrong is the wife of Seth Armstrong and mother of his sons, Jimmy and Fred. She appeared periodically from 1979 to 1986. Meg is first seen when her eldest son Jimmy and his fiancé come to stay with them after years living away from home. Meg is happy to see her son despite differences between Jimmy and his parents. ''Emmerdale'' (known as ''Emmerdale Farm'' until 1989) is a British soap opera that is broadcast on ITV1. The show is set in Emmerdale (known as Beckindale until 1994), a fictional village in the Yorkshire Dales. Created by Kevin Laffan, ''Emmerdale Farm'' was first broadcast on 16 October 1972. Interior scenes have been filmed at the Leeds Studios since its inception. Exterior scenes were first filmed in Arncliffe in Littondale, and the series may have taken its name from Amerdale, an ancient name of Littondale. Henry Wilks
Henry Wilks is a fictional character from the British television soap opera ''Emmerdale'', played by Arthur Pentelow. He ran the Woolpack public house alongside Amos Brearly (Ronald Magill) for nearly 20 years. Creation and casting Henry is one of the eight original main characters conceived by the creator of ''Emmerdale'', Kevin Laffan. Hayward 1997, pp.9–11. The serial centred around the Sugdens, a farming family who owned Emmerdale Farm on the outskirts of Beckindale village. Laffan explained that he was interested by the notion that farming was "a way of life" and not just a way to earn a living, as well as "the mental attitude" that set them apart. Amos Brearly
Amos Brearly is a fictional character from the British television soap opera ''Emmerdale'', played by Ronald Magill. He made his first appearance during the serial's debut episode on 16 October 1972. Amos ran The Woolpack pub and was the village gossip. A double act was later formed between Amos and Henry Wilks ( Arthur Pentelow), which lasted for 19 years.
